Firmware 2.0 update for the Canon 7D
« on: August 07, 2012, 12:27:05 am »

Canon has just released the Firmware 2.0 for the Canon 7D. When I last check if you are running Mountain Lion like I am you will need to down load under Lion. Had no problems and it loaded with no issues. Now I need to test it out in the morning.

- larger maximum burst of images in continuous shooting
- Adds support for the new Canon GPS
- in-camera RAW processing
- in-camera rating
- Manual Audio Gain controls
and much more

Did it keep all your custom settings and what not or does it get wiped back to out of the box setup?

As far as I can tell I did not lose any custom settings. But then again I only had a custom setting setup for working with HDR.
Just tested that custom setting (have two of them) and they where still there. So I assume it does not wipe out settings.

Cool thanks - I just needed to know if I had to write everything down before updating, better safe than sorry :)

After going through all the setting now I did find that the Date/Time did change.
So you may want to check that setting out after installing the Firmware 2.0.

Yeah, it went right to that screen after the flash finished, since it has the new time zone settings you need to fill in.

All good!

Is anyone else having issues with 7d FW 2.0? I was shooting yesterday and the physical controls of the camera were completely unresponsive. Power, shutter, menu... nothing. The only way to reset the camera was to eject the battery and reinsert. I was using my Canon EFS 17-55 2.8, so lens incompatibility is not likely. Seemed like it may be a Auto-Power Off issue. The camera top display was populated with data, but could not change anything or shoot.

I tried to revert to 1.2.5 but the camera will not allow this, forward upgrades only...

Have a shoot tomorrow... hope this does not continue.

Is there a secret process for reverting firmware?

I believe it requires Canon to revert.  No issues here.  I have heard of that behavior on other models using 3rd part batts and/or grips though. I use both and have had no problems yet.

No issues here either - using 3rd party grip and batteries too.

I donĀ“t know if that is the case, but one of the final instructions in the firmware upgrade is to remove the battery for at least two seconds, and then reinsert it, for the upgrade to take effect.

Everything worked fine yesterday for the shoot. I was using a 3rd party battery the day before. I'll try the 3rd party battery again and see it it recurs.

Thanks for the responses.

Just to add I was out shooting over the weekend with the new Firmware 2.0 update and had no issues.
The only item I almost forgot to update was the date/time as that does change after updating the Firmware.

My 7d also has problems with the new firmware. With AF off and even no flash card, it cannot sustain 8fps in high speed shooting. It takes 3 or 4 at high speed then skips mostly random frames thereafter. It doesn't seem to be a mechanical problem because with a memory card in it (functions same with or without card installed) the frame rate is very inconsistent. Also, in the viewfinder it says it only has buffer room for 3 images left. VERY annoying!

Any ideas?

Oh, my bad. You're right. It's the high ISO noise reduction. I had the ISO set to 800 and it seemed to be activated there as well. I don't remember having that problem with the old firmware. That's really strange.
