Diffraction is getting a big problem if we want more pixels from small sensors. There is nothing optical companies can do about that. There really is no substitute to square inches...
It depends on how you see it. If you are a landscape photographer and want to maximize depth of field only resolution matters, not sensor size. Larger sensor => longer focal lenghts => shorter DOF => compensated with smaller aperture => zerosum game concerning diffraction.
