New 645Pro 'medium format' Camera App
« on: May 03, 2012, 11:27:20 pm »

Has anyone seen this application for the iPhone called 645Pro?

It makes your iPhone into a medium format type of camera.

This is the description off the website:
"Drawing its inspiration from the obsession with quality embodied by top-end Medium Format film and digital cameras, 645 PRO exists purely to help you use your iPhone as a tool for composing, taking and saving the finest possible photographs."

645Pro Website

Thinking of downloading it.

Well, actually what it appears to do is make your phone into a point and shoot camera in the sense that it gives you manual control, from exposure to focus.  It includes some presets to simulate film and the most intriguing comment is saves your file in a "raw" format ... I assume that probably means just a tiff with no compression.

It's a stretch to throw the MF moniker on it ... as it doesn't really do anything but enable standard manual controls of the iPhone camera.

It does sound worth checking out ... I snap a lot of things with my iPhone nowadays, this may offer something useful.

645Pro? Obviously this app was written by Mamiya back in 1992.  ;)

The makers of the app state they access the iPhone´s "rawdata" - which actually is not true, they try to get to the data before the iPhone outputs it with it´s own jpg coding.
The app shall use a better coding which has larger gamut, less artifacts. If this works ...... ????

Right now I have about 15 x "Pro or similar" camera apps on my iPhone which all do something more  or less good. None of them has really blown me out of my socks.
But I was told this is because of the Apple iOS SDK that only allows certain modifications. So, ...........try it and report.  :)

TIA

New 645Pro 'medium format' Camera App: weird name!

I was wondering if the name "645" referred to a format of 6 x 4.5 mm (rather than cm) but the iPhone sensor is not even that big: 1/3.2", or in real money 4.54 x 3.42 mm.

If it offers manual controls thats kinda a big one, I haven't looked that much into iPhone photography beyond Instagram (apps other then the built in camera) but this could be interesting. I think offering some control over exposure is a big leap already in quality of images. I don't know if there are any other apps I have seen which offer control over shutter speed or exposure but I could be wrong...or misunderstanding this. Lets download it and see!

Updated: I just downloaded it, and it seems you can't manually control the shutter speed, I don't know if I'm missing something, but thats disappointing.

A look at their other products could explain the name.

Cheers,

Ah, now they're just being way too cheeky.

"The fun of iPhoneography is that – with certain apps – you get a bit of both: digital convenience and the look and feel of analogue film!"

So your iPhone will spit out a roll of celluloid film that you can actually feel?!  ::)
