Magnify button on 5D3
« on: March 23, 2012, 11:05:37 pm »

Those of you who have been using the new camera are probably questioning why Canon moved the magnify button to the left just under the new "Rate" button. It meant that you have to take your hand of the lens to quickly check and adjust focus. Someone on another forum has pointed out that the "SET" button can be reprogrammed to be the magnify button. Just go to Menu > Custom Controls > SET and change to magnify.

Or you may have chosen to read the manual in which case you figured this out already ;)

After using my 1DS3 for 4 years I am struggling with the ergonomics of my new 5D3.

Rate button?? stupid magnify button on the left hand side.  The new LCD is nice however every finger print shows. It is like you had just eaten KFC!

The quiet shutter is nice.

Dave

Do you feel the 5D3 could replace your 1DS3 ?  Hard choice for me as I loved my 1DS2.

Yes, for me it probably will. There are enough benefits to make the change. This may not the case for everybody especially if you require a 'pro' body.

The disappointing aspect is the sensor (5D3) appears to be no better than the 1DS3 from ISO100 - 800.

The rear LCD screen, AF and silent shutter on the 5D3 are great and of course the video option. The 5D3 is way lighter than the 1DS3. It will be good for travel too.

Rate button??
Yes, I wondered about that too.
I've never seen anyone ask for such a thing, who's it for ?.
With so little space available for hardware controls on modern cameras it does seem a rather curious choice.

Maybe some journo requested it.

I would prefer to see a user defined button and if someone wants to use it as a "rate" button or a print to a canon printer,  so be it.

I think Canon needs to employ someone from the Leica design team  :)

I have been using my 5D Mark II for years and recently bought a 5D Mark III body.

The move of the magnify button does not bother me. It reminds me of the magnify operation of 1Ds Mark II.

This is a new camera with new layout that needs some getting used to. In many ways this is like people preferring the old Facebook compared to the new timeline.

There are people who prefer the old way, and there are people who are open to a new way of things.

Quite agree. A bigger degree of user customisation would be very welcome. It surely can't be that difficult to implement either.

Took me about half a shoot to get used to the magnify button changing to the set button. There were a couple other buttons I had to learn as well, but that's why I sat down with the camera and manual for an hour or so to learn the changes that most affected me (no, I didn't learn the AF system that quickly and am still not a master of it but it is fantastic).

It would be nice if that rate button could be user defined. I don't get it but they seem to think it was a good enough idea, I can easily ignore it.
