Canon iPF8300 vs hp designjet z6200
« on: September 23, 2011, 03:01:42 pm »

Hey All

I am new to the printing world and trying to play catch up.

A little background about me, I am in Solftware support but started a photo book business.  We are currently looking to at getting a Wide format printer.

The 2 printers we have narrowed it down to are

- Canon iPF8300
- HP designjet z6200

We will be print photographic paper on these so we need near prefect printing.

The Canon is currently ahead by a nose due to the 12 in colours to give a little wide colour gamut.

any help for the experts on here would be great to help us narrow down the choice.

Also in the near future we will be offer large sign printing as well.

And pros and cons that you have found while using them?

I have used both printers. They both great in different fields.

Under my exp.
Z6200:
Super productive due to it's printing speed
Excellent color but if you want to use a RIP, it might be a little bit confuse due to the CMYK+ONLY Red
Good for large sign printing
The blade are so so only, it CANNOT cut a lot of materials such as thicker paper or canvas
It doesn't take "too thick" paper such as Hahnemuhle Photo Rag Pearl

iPF8300:
Very Good color reproduction
Very Fast as well
It takes almost any kind of materials
The blade trims almost everything
If you use a RIP, CMYK+RGB is even harder to get it right

I prefer the Z6200 for your business because
1. Speed is more important for you
2. The color gamut is big enough for your type of jobs
3. The 60" wide machine is a beast
4. If you get the 60" one, you can perfectly expand your business to large format poster field.

Hope my information would help you a bit

Aaron

Hi lovejit,

I agree with Aaron, both printers are excellent for the right application.

I'm not sure where you are located but we have a Z6200 in our demo room that you could come try out. We're located in the Chicago area. That demo printer is actually for sale: http://www.luminous-landscape.com/forum/index.php?topic=58114.0

If you're local and would like to check out the Z6200 please let me know. Unfortunately we don't have an iPF8300 in our demo room at this time. You can reach me here if you'd like more info: aeverding (at) itsupplies.com.

If you are printing books I would go for the ipf 8300.
You can get stuff out pretty fast from that maching if you make custum media settings.

Friend of mine has a canvas business selling on the net. Hes made over 10km of canvas in 2 years. No problems with the printer so far except regular maintanence. Hes gone through 2 sets of printheads (4 in total as the machine uses 2).

If that includes all kinds of glossy photo papers, is the Z6200 then still in competition?

Has HP solved the matte paper/weak reds problem of the 3100's in the X200 series?

If there was a Red problem in the Z3100 it has been solved in the Z3200. The Z6200 is however an 8 ink system comparable to the Epson 11880-9890-3880 inkset , MK-PK-LK-CcMmY and the reds are mixed accordingly.

I have seen the iPF8300 praised for its gloss prints on for example Baryta-Fiber papers (no bronzing, no gloss difference) and I wonder whether the Z6200 can deliver similar quality.

I'm curious what your friend prints (artwork, photos, banners?) and what size(s)?  That works out to more than 412 rolls of canvas per year.

If he's printing large panos then that would eat up the canvas, but if it's small 16x20 canvases or so then that' a lot of prints.

My vote is for the 8300.  Wicked machine!  I've never owned a LF HP, but the Canon IPF8300 is amazing and you can't go wrong with it.
