How much would you pay extra for a decent camera in your iphone?

A digital camera is a lens and sensor and a lot of electronics, some buttons and dials, a decent screen, software and a case.

Except for the lens and the sensor, a phone already supplies all the pieces so if enough people wanted a better camera in their phone, it should be pretty easy to accommodate them.

Compact camera sales stats indicate that a lot of people want/need compact camera quality, and so a more expensive phone that provides this feature should have an audience. Is that the case?

yes, i´d like a better cam in my phone. but i don´t think that there will ever be a phone with a camera that i´d be happy with. None of the P&S cams are good enough in my eyes. The look of those small sensors and plastic lenses just doesn´t work for me. The Sony Nex7 or 5N paired with the new Zeiss 24/1.8 might be a starting point (the currently available sample images are not good though, i guess they don´t show the real potential) but 2K USD is a bit too much.

I don´t want to pay extra for a cam below this standard but i accept everything below as a gift. The 5MP images from my current phone are not even usable for ebay.

Nobody even thought that it may look like it looks today. No one even imagined then that the camera may be digital. So never say never. Anyway, if you want to put the photo on the Internet, you don't need high quality glass lenses. As for quality - I think that everything can be done. See what is the difference between the quality the Iphone 3  and Iphone  4th

iPhone camera is plenty good enough for what it is, if they can improve it then all the better.

I would rather a real camera - Fuji X100 or Leica X1 Thanks. I take either with me all the time.

My feeling is that Apple *could*  sell a model with a better camera, but they probably cannot be bothered making it.

Everything can be, but whether it makes sense:) You do not need this amount of data to the Internet ... Besides the camera in every phone has one very nice advantage. Most of us have it everywhere you go:) It does not take much space ... The camera does not have these advantages.

The point at stakes here is probably the profitability of camera manufacturers.

Nikon has somehow been able to sell a huge amount of average compact digital cameras mostly thanks to design, but the lack of real innovation will probably kill that division within 2 or 3 years with the impacts you can imagine on their ability to keep investing in DSLRs.

Canon is likely to be impacted as well and their quality issues won't help, but I believe that they have understood better what features they need to include in compacts to differentiate them better compared to phones. Still, this is about no more than 15% of their compact sales, the rest is doomed also.

Nothing, but I'm surprised you didn't see the omission in your question yet, and a carefully checked error-free poll would be great even though I would not pay anything extra for that either.
