Spectraview II Preference Settings for NEC MultiSync LCD2690WUXi
« on: September 13, 2011, 12:02:00 pm »

Just watched MONITOR CALIBRATION in Camera to Print to Screen where Jeff Schewe discusses Spectraview preferences settings for the NEC PA241W monitor.
Under the ICC PROFILES tab (in SpectraView preferences) in the section called "Sources of primary color chromaticities for ICC profile" he chose FACTORY MEASUREMENTS and said he did so because the monitor was new.
For my NEC 2690WUXi should I select CALIBRATION SENSOR MEASUREMENTS instead of FACTORY MEASUREMENTS. (because my monitor is not as new as the PA241W used in the video?

Also, I noticed he set the luminance for 140.  Would this be monitor dependent or mostly based on your working environment lighting conditions? Somewhere - don't remember where - I was guided to try to get the luminance to a lower value of around 120.

Thanks
John

I use the Factory Measurements because, well, that's what Will suggested...as to the age of the display, I don't know. Best bet would be to test and see what your display/puck combo does the best with. I'm using an i1Pro for measurements.

As for the output luminosity, yes, that all depends on your viewing environment. 140 is what I consider standard...but in my main working area, I actually run my displays at 160. YMMV....again, best to test it for yourself.

That setting has nothing to do with how new a display is but rather what instrument is being used. Are certain measurements being used that were taken at the factory or with your instrument? With the NEC branded instrument, or a Spectrophotometer, you may be better off with this setting off but with Colorimeters that do not have matrices that expect a wide gamut device, you’ll probably want to have the setting on as the factory measurements are probably more accurate.

That setting is solely based on the print viewing conditions next to the display and the desire to match it. FWIW, 120cd/m2 is on the low side for a new LCD like this. If you can go higher, to say 150 or so, it means the display can compensate for when the brightness drifts up instead of down (for example when you first turn it on) assuming of course you can control the print viewing such that 150cd/m2 matches.

I'm using the i1Pro Spectrophotometer - I had been using the AUTO setting - will try the other two to see if I can detect any differences - thanks

I'm pretty happy with the PA241w in concert with multi-profiler at the moment. I test it from time to time with a spectro and by comparing prints and so far it's very stable. But it's my understanding that the accuracy is based on the calibration setting done a the factory. My question (and I think a lot of others wonder the same thing) is how long should someone be confident in operating this way before they need to re-profile? Should we expect the monitor to drift away from the factory measurements over time, or is there something else going on here?

The display will drift but if we are confident on how the product was designed (and time may tell), a compensation matrix is used to account for all this.
