Mamiya ZD back
« on: August 10, 2011, 03:15:45 am »

Hi I am looking to aquire a digital back for my Mamiya 645 afdii and looks as if I may be able to still get a ZD back from a supplier in Hong Kong and I am wondering whether this would be a wise move (not buying from Hong Kong I don't have a problem with that) no is the ZD back a worthwhile investment or should I maybe look to a DM22 comparative pricing ZD $4300 DM22 $7700.

The ZD back is a very good back at low speeds and can produce stunning results, better than any 35mm Kamera in terms if image "feeling" due to the different lens focals and makes. It also has the possibility to make stunning IR photography by simply exchanging the filter in front of the sensor.
I am selling a complete kit, ZDback, AFD2 body, 80mm, 150mm 2,8 manual focus and the 375 euro worth IR photography filter. Only 3475 euro for the complete set.

How does it do with long exposures such as 30 seconds?

It does not have good long exposure characteristics.

I would stay away from this back.

Above ISO 100 - not OK.

Tethering - not OK.

If you can afford DM22 then it is much better.

ZD can be OK for a hobbyist to play with, but as a main camera for a pro it is too limited.

ZD back would appear to be better built then the DM22. Remember that the DM22 is a rebranded Leaf digital back. In my experiences I do not have 1 good thing to say about leaf backs. To me the are subpar in every way imaginable. Look at the lower mp phases backs. They are superbly built. I just ordered an IQ180 because of this. The Leaf backs when I demoed them frankly didn't even work. Mamiya 645 is way better then Hasselblad (which is what I currently use) but I would look at other options in that price range like a used Phase (you'll get higher mp if you buy a used one) or a new lower mp phase or even a Pentax 645d all of which will make you happier then a leaf back in my opinion....that is if you actually want to take pictures.....
