LR re-install and catalog transfer
« on: July 30, 2011, 02:13:07 pm »

Hi folks
Getting a new Mac next week, a replacement for my old Mac Pro. Will need to re- install LR3 and also transfer over my Catalog and images.

I've searched but can't find current advice. Any tips and hints as to the most painless way to do this would be much appreciated!

Thx for your time.

The easiest way is to set up your new computer so that it has the same folder structure as your old one, and simply transfer everything to the new drive.  Lightroom doesn't care where the information is 'physically' located, as long as it knows where it's 'virtually' located - i.e. C:\My Pictures is the same on one drive as another.  If you don't know where your presets and things are located, you can right-click on one you've made (not the ones that come with LR) and select 'Show in Finder'.

Two words: Migration Assistant. Launch it, go get a sandwich and a beer, and when you return you'll have your old computer's files, preferences, and desktop in your nice new fast machine. It's wonderful.
