5D to 5D MK II focus issue
« on: June 15, 2011, 08:07:34 am »

I am rather late with upgrading from my 5D to the MK II.
I reallly needed the extra file size for bigger prints. So I sold the 5D & on Sat I bought a new Mk II

To date I have only taken a handful of shots but the focus seems 'a hair' off - is that possible?
Anyone else...is it a known issue?

Thanks
Frank

Hi Frank,

Each camera body and lens combination should ideally be calibrated to compensate for the minute (combined) tolerances. With the 5D Mk II you can do that yourself without the need to send your gear in for servicing (which may even not help as intended). Check for the AF micro adjustment capability built into the custom functions of your camera.

Cheers,
Bart

Thanks.
I expected it to be pin sharp out of the box - just as my 5D was

Hi.
I too went from a 5d to a 5d2. The microadjustment on the 5d2 appears to have to be used on many lenses -- two of the three i have (24-105; VC 40; the VC 20 does not need any). Check the LensAlign tool, there are reviews on it by Michael Reichmann on this site.

I bought a pair of 1D Mark IV cameras last spring. One of them was pin sharp out of the box, the other was badly out of focus with all lenses. A trip to CPS got it fixed. But no, I would not expect pin sharp out of the box with any camera these days.

I learn something new everyday.
I have been shooting since the early 70's, and digitally for about 5.5 years, and have never heard of such a thing. I had no awareness that I needed to calibrate my lenses. I will now look it up in the manual but if anyone cares to give me an easy tutorial or link that would be great.

Hi again:

See the review of the original LensAlign here (either type in LensAlign in the search field or go to Product  reviews (L).

Go to : http://mtapesdesign.com/ for information of the tool. It is a fairly easy task to find the correct adjustment but it does take a bit of time -- all well spent. The camera remembers which micro adjustment to apply for each lens that you adjust, does not have to be a Canon lens.

There is an unofficial Canon instruction paper that I have printed out but now I can't find the link anywhere. This link has some good info. If you want the thing I got from Canon, PM me and I'll email it to you.
