Simple Digital Camera Question
« on: February 11, 2011, 08:15:33 pm »

Most recent digital cameras select automatic exposure from a range of available f-stops and shutter speeds (leaving ISO out for a moment). What fractional increments of aperture and shutter speed does a digital camera employ when selecting automatic exposure?

If I understand the OP question well, I think it is 1/3 of an fStop. In Canon all apertures and shutter speeds are modified in 1/3 increments. You can change that to 1/2 increments if you desire.

It depends on the manufacturer.

For Nikon, this is also selectable in terms of 1/2 or 1/3 stop increments.

In the Nikon, all ISO settings, including intermediate settings correspond to analog gain settings.  In some Canon models, intermediate ISO settings involve nearest-analog setting plus digital +-gain.

Quote Wikipedia.

Modern electronically-controlled interchangeable lenses, such as those from Canon and Sigma for SLR cameras, have f-stops specified internally in 1/8-stop increments, so the cameras' 1/3-stop settings are approximated by the nearest 1/8-stop setting in the lens.
