operation of Canon dslr with external shutter
« on: March 04, 2011, 06:42:19 am »

I am looking for information to isolate (remove) the mirror/shutter assembly on a canon eos and enable it such that it can operated it without the built in shutter/mechanicals operating and use a copal lens /shutter and flash sync as trigger
any suggestions/ offers?

I recently finished converting a Toyo 45C to use with my 5DMKII, pretty stoked with the results and there were some technical issues to work through, but the camera is now a joy to use and focus with. Shooting video with full tilt, shift, swing, rise & fall is a great thing. My main objective was to keep the Toyo 45C in tact so I can switch back to shooting film, which just means undoing 4 screws and putting the rear standard back in place.

At this stage I only use the camera's shutter to shoot with, and always in live view as focus is very fine but easy with the 45C's focus controls. For lenses I am using my Mamiya RZ67 collection, 50mm, 110mm & 180mm which work out to be their exact focal lengths on the 5D with this setup. In future I hope to by 2-3 Rodenstocks to shoot film with, this will enable shutter firing with the copal shutter on the lens board with the camera fired before hand in bulb mode.

Not too sure if this is what you were after, but an idea anyway, there are commercial versions by Horseman, Sinar etc but they are expensive, total cost of my build being US$200 and I could use existing lenses I had. I do have a release cable but there is some connection made between the RZ67 body and the lenses that enable the shutter to be fired, and as my setup uses a dead lens mount this doesn't work.

Thank you for that comprehensive response however I have done the same with the Sinar p2/p3 set up with both canon and nikon dslr's which is working fine and allows me to use a range of the sinar db lens with modification.
What I am trying to do is to isolate the canon shutter (physical disconnection) and use an external shutter as the can shutter doesn't last very long
thank you for your effort :)
