Lens Shade Adding Flare/Ghost
« on: January 30, 2011, 05:11:45 pm »

Lens shade should reduce flare, as long as it doesn't darken the corner, right?

I found some bright flare or ghost edges in some of my pictures. These were taken with a long long shade that I borrowed from a friend.
For investigation, I looked through the lens when it's off the camera. Interestingly, I saw the reflection of inner surface of the hood, Although there's no sign of corner darkening in the picture.

With the shade off the lens, the picture is better.

I have encountered veiling flare that resulted from strong reflection from the inside the of the Nikkor 500/4P lens hood. The sun was out of the FoV but not far enough to prevent it striking the interior of the lens hood half way down and reflecting onto the front element. This prompted me the "flock it".

I will look for the cone shape hood. Hope it'd be better than the tube type.
