can you use 4800 ink with 7600?
« on: August 23, 2010, 03:59:25 pm »

I'm thinking about picking up a 7600.  I currently have a CIS for the 4800 and am wondering if it would be interchangeable...

On the 9600, 7600, 4000 printers, the carts are all the same and work well from machine-to-machine.

However, there's an ink formulation-cartridge keying that was changed, along with the head between the x000 series and the 9800/7800 and 4800 printers.

From what I understand, you can use the carts between the 7800/9800 but they don't interchange with the 4800 because the 4800 uses non-presurized carts to push the ink but the 9800/7800 do.

Between the x800 and the x880 printers, the only carts you can't use interchangably are the Vivid Magenta/Vivid Light Magenta. All the others are in common. I don't think that you can change between the 9880/7880 and the 4880, though.

Bottom line is that the x600 carts won't work with any of the x800 or x880 printers and vise-versa. Different inks, heads, cartridge keying, etc., and even if you could, you'd need a custom print profile with every combination of ink and remember which was which.

If you want to have the ability to cartridge swap, you'll need to downgrade to an Epson 4000. The 4000 along with the 11880 printer are about the only Epson printers that print Mk or Pk without having to purge the black channel.

If you've got a CIS, that would lead one to believe you're not using OEM inks.  If that's true, it would lead one to believe you're not concerned about head clogs or other potentially fatal issues involved with non-OEM inks.

The 7600 has only a single black as opposed to the multi-black/grey of the 4800.  Otherwise, the colours are the same.  Whether the CIS you have for your 4800 would work on the 7600 would depend on tubing sizes and things such as that.  The 7600 will have a different jetting and head screening which means ink will get laid down on the paper differently so any custom profiles you have from your 4800 with the CIS probably won't work using the same inks on the 7600.  In addition, due to the different head technology, while you may not have experienced clogs with the CIS on your 4800, there's no guarantee you'll have the same experience with the 7600.

Incorrect, Bob.
The 7600, like the 9600 that I own, has either Photo Black and Light Black or Matte Black and Light black.

I assume you are using refillable cartridges? Absolutely you can use those inks in the printer. The only thing is you may have to color profile a little bit differently but other than that you will be ok.
