Canon 8300 and True Black and White
« on: June 05, 2010, 10:24:45 am »

Is anyone currently using the new Canon 8300 with the True Black and White software?  http://www.usa.canon.com/consumer/controll...p;modelid=20051

To me is sounds like their results on these fiber gloss media should be the best there is currently. I am very curious to see how this is working out and if anyone knows where one can have sample prints made. I'm wondering what the actual uncolorized hue of these gray inks is before adding color. The one thing I do like about the HP is that the hue is neutral on the gloss fiber media, and selenium on matt rag media. And with warm matt media a nice split effect with cool shadows and warm highlights when not using composite color inks.

This new Canon sounds very promising from that recent printer comparison review, that although brief, was well written I thought. I still don't completely understand why one of the big three doesn't add one more light, light gray to achieve a true, tonally balanced quad set, especially considering how many slots these newer printers have to play with.

Paul Roark has done some b&w ink blends with the HP PK. He has some tone curves and comments in other threads on tonality, papers, and other ink blends. I don't know if he compares tge Canon inks at all:

I don't know the Canon inks, software, or machine. If you look at what Paul has done over the years, you will see results from one K to many K inks on different machines. What is good enough varies with drop size, dither patterns, etc.

I am going to mix up a custom b&w ink set from the HP Vivera Photo Black this summer, for glossy only printing with GLOP on a 7600. I will also buy a 1400 for the same ink set.

With the 7600, I will blend K, LK, LLK, etc. just to fill the 6 slots, plus the GLOP is 7. Or, I will add a to ing color ink, depending on native hue on the papers I use. I did that in the past with the Eboni that Paul likes, but wants a glossy only ink set. I mixed one last year with Epsons PK, but didn't like the slightly greenish blacks I got.  Nice glossy ink set though overall. Most ink sets are optimized for matte papers, or try to do both.

Depends on whether you can dedicate a printer and create your own profiles. It is not a bad proposition though if you get a used wide format for a reasonable price. For about $140 for 400ml of HP PK, you can make 6 200ml dilutions (plus maybe $10 for the 1 liter of glycerin/ water mix.)

I haven't tried True B&W since it's Mac-only. I've heard that it's based on the same open-sourced print engine that QuadtoneRIP is based on.

I have found that using the monochrome mode in the Canon print plugin/driver along with QTR-generated profiles works very well.

That's right Jimmy. You were one of the first big proponents of the Canon IPF series and have a lot of direct experience with them.

You were always super helpful with my HP purchase and warranty extension, which ends in February, ugh. So if I continue to keep doing this Canon most likely is where I'll be headed. I wish I was in a position to buy one right now, but I'm not.
