As a prosumer, I've been saving for a Canon 10D and looking forward to going all digitial. With the announcement of the 300D or "Digital Rebel", and Canon's promises that the two cameras were capable of identical picture quality, I am very intrigued at saving $600!
I read the article linked on this site with the comparison, but I found it a bit too editorial to make an easy comparison. For those who missed it:
http://www.robgalbraith.com/bins/content_p...cid=7-6270-6325I put together a list of differences in a much briefer format that I found helpful. Maybe others will too.
----------
Features missing from 300D compared to 10D
White Balance: No Kelvin white balance control (all other modes the same)
File format: Can’t choose JPEG size in RAW+JPEG format (fixed at medium/fine)
ISO settings: ISO 3200 not available
Processing rate: 4 frame buffer at 2.5fps instead of 9 frame buffer
Metering: Less control over metering modes, cannot choose metering mode arbitrarily
Autofocus: No direct control over One Shot vs. AI Servo
Viewfinder: Slightly darker pentamirror vs. pentaprism
Controls: Focus mode missing from LCD display; quickdial replaced with buttons
External Sync: No PC terminal!
Custom Functions: None!
Construction: Less weight/bulk – not as durable?
--------
Well, is there anything I missed? Are these features worth $600?
My evaluation:
White balance is not an issue if you shoot RAW.
Ditto for RAW+JPEG
Noise at 3200 can't be good. I would never use it.
Unless you're shooting alot of sports/action, 4 frame buffer is more than most people would use.
I've never tried to force a meter mode on my Elan 7. Shooting MF I use an incident meter, and so this is over my head.
AI focus control I would miss sometimes. When shooting environmental portaits, I compensate for motion in the background by setting to One-Shot.
Viewfinder - I guess I'd have to see how "dark" it really is.
Controls - no opinion.
No PC terminal would mean no strobes in a studio! This would be a huge loss for a pro.
No custom functions, but since I've never used any before, I probably wouldn't miss them.
The construction worries me somewhat. For $900, a camera should last a lifetime of "reasonable use". Not having held one in my clumsy mitts I couldn't say yet how I felt about it.
Anyone else care to express an opinion?
