Phase Portable, Mobile sollution alt
« on: January 07, 2010, 01:10:13 am »

I have a situation where my portable gear is in service, and I have a location shoot coming up right around the corner.

I wont be getting my gear back from service soon enough for the shoot.  So I wanted to take my Laptop and my Phase H25 back on location.

I have read Micheals port sollution recently (originally years back when the write up made me go buy one...after buying the CD with the raw files of the different tests)

Local shops do not have it for rent, and at the time I think Phase wanted $2000 for this(maybe they lowered it to the reasonable $69.99 by now, but some how I doubt it)

I know Michael mentioned it ibeing a sealed lead acid battery...and I was wondering if anyone has made such a rig, or knows where to get parts, or has one that they can rent or buy or loan or...etc etc...

I rather make one if it costs more than $200, as the batts are about $30 to 50 max  (My replace batt for the 1500Watt UPS backup is less than $120), then you got some cables.

***Also, I have a FW hub that has a power plug to it, and not sure how it would play into it, as I don't plan on extending the FW using the HUB, but thought I would mention it.

If you don't have one....maybe some images of it with the differnt connections would help me make one...Yes I know this route might not make it in time for my shoot, but It would be ready for future needs.

I'm assuming you have a PC laptop? Does it have a PCMCIA slot? If so, you can get a PCMCIA 6-pin Firewire adapter with a socket for supplying power like this: http://www.iodata.jp/product/interface/usb/cb1394l/ Get one of the Universal laptop batteries that have different types of connectors. One of the connectors should fit the socket on the Firewire adapter. You're good to go for at least 6~8 hours.

If you don't want all the wires and connectors, get a cheap 12" G4 iBook and an additional battery, and again, you're good for about the same time.

I used both these with my H20.

Hey Kumar, thanks for the reply!  I have both, but I like C1 on the PC and more comf using it.

I do have the PCMCIA Firewire card, and I have plugged the adapter into a wall outlet....

I tried this sometime back, and I remember it either not working, or that when the file was writing from the capture, it would either have some hic-ups, stalls, or a "calculating black , etc"? I forget what it was , but I dont remember it being smooth. I know there is a FW setting in C1, maybe that needs to be set at some specific rate?

My main concern was not feeding too many volts to the firewire, so it doesnt have a chance to spike the DB...a thought, but not sure how it plays in, as I think the MB would regulate the volts?  Tomorrow first thing I will do is get my gear out and try this again.  thanks again.

Phil, I never used AC power, so I don't know if there's any issue with that. I have an APC-20000 battery: http://www.ecvv.com/selling-lead/1051455.html Absolutely no problems with it, either powering the laptop or the Firewire card.

doesnt look like you can buy from that site, you have to email an inquiry...never done that before.
I will have to go into a local PC shop and see if they have a uni laptop battery.

I think I found the same thing on Ebay for about $130 shipped.  thanks.
