New SINAR EMOTION Firmware update
« on: September 17, 2009, 08:59:39 am »

I have seen on the Sinar.ch website that a new firmware is available, version 5.10, the readme file states that this will resolve CF writing problems happening with both the 54LV and 75LV.

Anyone tested it?

My Emotion 54LV is coming back from a checkup to Sinar, so I will post some news in a few days.

Have a nice day!

Roberto

I would also like to know what difference the new firmware makes to the performance of the classic (non LV) Sinar eMotion 75 back?

Just found this relevant thread about version 5.0 but seems like there has been one more update since then?

Dear Roberto,

This 5,10 firmware version is not that new and has been put online on September 03rd 2009. However, it is the newest one.

There has been a few more updates since the version 5.0: 5.06; 5.07; 5.08; 5;09, and now 5.10

The firmware updates do have the same effect on either the Sinarback eMotion 75 or the Sinarback eMotion 75 LV.

Here the "Read Me" file explaining the differences/changes for the different firmware versions:

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Sinarback eMotion Firmware 5.10
ReadMe

1. Purpose Of Use
The Sinarback eMotion Firmware 5.10 is intended to be used
with the following Sinar digital camera backs:

• Sinarback eMotion 22
• Sinarback eMotion 54 LV
• Sinarback eMotion 75 and eMotion 75 LV
• 2nd Generation Sinarback eMotion 75 LV
with 2.5” LC display

2. Updating the Firmware
In order to update your Sinarback eMotion from firmware
version 4.x to 5.10, connect your Sinarback eMotion to the
computer and make sure that no capturing software (Sinar
CaptureShop™, eyelike Capture Pro, or Sinar eXposure™) is
running. Double-click the enclosed SBeMotionUpdater appli-
cation and follow the instructions on the computer screen.

Please note that once the back has been updated to
firmware 5.x it is not possible to downgrade the back
to a previous 4.x firmware version.

3. Version Log Sinarback eMotion Firmware
Changes in Firmware 5.10 as Compared to Version 5.09
a. A problem with certain slower CF cards – that in
some cases impeded their correct recognition and
thus affected subsequent writing – has been solved.

Changes in Firmware 5.09 as Compared to Version 5.08
a. Warning messages that are displayed on a yellow
background can be read better.

Changes in Firmware 5.08 as Compared to Version 5.07
a. A modification required for the compatibility with
the Sinar Hy6 Firmware 2.11 and higher has been
implemented.

Changes in Firmware 5.07 as Compared to Version 5.06
a. A bug in Firmware 5.04 and later that prevented
the Sinarback eMotion from communicating with
Mamiya 645 AFD II bodies with newer firmware
versions has been fixed.

Changes in Firmware 5.06 as Compared to Version 5.0
a. The Sinarback eMotion Firmware 5.06 includes the
support for Sinarback eMotion 75 and eMotion 75 LV
with a new control board (serial number 1306 and
higher) as well as for the 2nd generation Sinarback
eMotion 75 LV with a 2.5” LC Display (serial number
1377 and higher).

b. The Sinarback eMotion Firmware 5.06 includes a
new Japanese language file, which fixes an issue with
overlapping characters in some of the menus.

c. A number of minor bugs related to writing proper
meta-data from the camera body to the stored image
have been fixed.

4. What’s New in Firmware 5?
a. The Sinarback eMotion Firmware version 5 includes
the support of the Sinar Hy6 medium format camera
system, including direct communication between
the camera body and the capturing software (re-
quires Sinar CaptureShop™ 5.5.2 and later or Sinar
eXposure™ 6.0 and later)

b. The nominal ISO speed ratings of the Sinarback eMo-
tion backs have been increased. The nominal ISO
speed ratings are now as follows:
• Sinarback eMotion 22 and eMotion 54 LV:
ISO 50 … ISO 400
• Sinarback eMotion 75 and eMotion 75 LV:
ISO 100 … ISO 800
Please note that this does not indicate that the
Sinarback eMotion backs have a higher sensi-
tivity with firmware 5.x. The change of the ISO
speed ratings does merely ensure correct expo-
sures and prevent overexposed highlights when
working with built-in exposure metering sys-
tems of medium format cameras.

c. The display quality of Sinarback eMotion 75 and
eMotion 75 LV with a new display controller (serial
number e75-07-1122 through 07-1216 and
e75-07-1226 and higher) has been improved. This
change does not affect Sinarback eMotion 22 and
eMotion 54 LV.

New SINAR EMOTION Firmware update
« Reply #6 on: November 18, 2009, 10:32:35 pm »

Thanks for the detailed reply Thierry.

It is very useful to have all this information bundled in one place, also I imagine for other entry-level users who are considering which system to buy, as I could not find it easily elsewhere on the web.

I know some of this information is also bundled together with the free download of the latest firmware from the Sinar website but I am unable to open the file until I get a Mac. Meanwhile my eMotion 75 is sitting on a shelf in my dry cabinet for the same reason, as getting hold of new equipment takes time where I am working and I only found out after I bought my preloved eMotion 75 earlier this year that the eXposure software downloadable from the Sinar website would not run on my PC.

Despite this hassle I am very happy to find that the online technical support provided by Sinar extends to legacy gear. While at least one friend is considering switching from MFDB to a DSLR primarily to secure himself what he considers to be a viable upgrade path into the future, I am thinking on-going firmware upgrades like the one you mention and other support provided by the manufacturer may be a good reason to invest in a mid-range MFDB instead of a DSLR, even if the latest and greatest MFDB’s are too expensive for ordinary mortals.

No doubt the innards of the legacy Sinar digital backs are built to last. Just hope the technical support continues, since not everything depends on bells and whistles.

Who knows? Maybe the same thought occurs to people with real money to spend?
