Wayne,
Thank you for this bit of info. It seems like a possible solution to the problem I posted here: MBP changes brightness by itself
I don't know how to write applescripts, but I'll look into it. Is there a way to find somewhere a reading of what the brightness slider % is? After I calibrate and set luminance with the i1, it gets lost because of the above-referenced problem. I've resorted to a slightly low setting that at least can be duplicated with F1/F2 keys.

Your problem about the MacBook getting brighter seems odd. Only possible thing I can think that would cause this is accidentally hitting the F2 key without switching the functionality of the fn key.
Anyway the applescripts are very simple. Open up the Applescript Editor, open a new script, and paste in the following
tell application "System Preferences"
activate
set current pane to pane "com.apple.preference.displays"
end tell
tell application "System Events" to tell process "System Preferences"
tell slider 1 of group 2 of tab group 1 of window 1 to set x to value
display dialog x
end tell
hit the compile button, then do a Save As. Select application from the File Format menu, and give it a name. This is now a double clickable app that simply reports the percentage value of the brightness slider.
If you want a script that sets the screen to that same brightness, open another new script and paste in the following
property brightness_level : 1
tell application "System Preferences"
activate
set current pane to pane "com.apple.preference.displays"
tell application "System Events"
set value of slider 1 of group 2 of tab group 1 of window "Color LCD" of process "System Preferences" to brightness_level
end tell
quit
end tell
Replace the 1 in the first line with the value reported by the previous script - it should be a decimal number such as 0.65
Replace the "Color LCD" with the title of the window that you see when selecting the Display preference pane.
Then compile that script, and do a Save As, also selecting application from the file type popup.
You now have two apps, simply double click on them to perform the appropriate action. If you need to edit the second applescript to adjust the number or change the display name, drag the script onto the Applescript editor icon in the dock rather than double clicking it.
