hello all,
what are you using for a good usb thether cord on your 5DMKII set ups?  i've always used the better firewire tether cords from digital transitions for phase thethering but now have the 5d and am wondering if there is anything of that quality (in the 20 foot or more arena)??

USB 2.0 max cable length per spec is 5 meters (16 1/2 feet approx) . You could try cascading using hubs though...

that was my understanding as well.  but then i saw this http://www.usbfirewire.com/Parts/rr-2mbr01-24.html and wondered how it may work with tethering or if it's just wishful thinking.

I'll guess i'll stay with an active extension like what's available through calumet etc...

thanks,
craig

Thanks for the link!  Actually they seem to have an active cable here http://www.usbfirewire.com/Parts/rr-usb2-ext-40ft-wht.html  - though it doesn't specifically say so it appears to have the electronics inside the cable. If so that would work. The 5M limitation is the specs on cabling without a repeater hub.

Also noted on their website they do custom cables so you could have them roll your own as an active cable?

i always use a 5m usb with a 3m std usb ext cord and have never had problems. i think ive also used a 5m ext as well in the past and its been fine. so 10m (30feet) isnt a problem for me.

+1

Did it today with my two year old MBP and D3X into capture one. The USB cables where the cheapo no-name type bought at the local computerstore. No problems at all.

cool.  i didn't see that.  i'll give them a call when i'm ready to order.  need a new MBP first.  I have a great 8-core station at home, but don't have anything for location which is what this would be for on the most part...
