Bowed 12' White Seamless
« on: August 10, 2009, 02:59:23 pm »

I have a 12" white seamless that the cardboard center shaft tends to bow after leaving it up for a while. Short of pulling it down after every use, is there anything that would keep it straight? I have the Manfrotto auto pole system that has the expandable ends that go in the cardboard about a foot or less. I was thinking of adding either a PVC or metal pole that is roughly the same diameter as the cardboard shaft that would be just short of the expandable ends. Any solutions?

Thanks,
Patrick Ray Dunn

nope.  sorry.  even if you take it down and lie it on the floor you're going to get a flat spot.

take it down, stand it as near on-end as possible, put it back in the box and the plastic to keep the humidity out of it.

I have used 1x4 x14' lumber on end for 12' rolls..clamp or tape the free end to the lumber and leave the roll on the floor
also 1.5" tube steel for inside the cardboard tube...you will need some good stands for this heavier setup.

Thanks, I'm going with the metal pole. The seamless will still bow, but not as bad as the old roll.

I use a piece of metal pipe that's about 14 feet long. No problem.

Either roll it up and stand it on end when not in use (the BEST way to keep it looking good long term), or using a metal pole to add integrity to the cardboard core.

Anything else will leave you with bows/sags/wrinkles.

But then again, seamless is expendable, so how long are you really trying to keep one roll around for reuse?

Patrick,

Have you ever looked at the FOBA seamless carriers?  Here's a link....

http://www.foba.ch/pdf/FOBA_shootingtables_lampstands_en.pdf

I get good feedback from shooters that have jumped to this system.

Hope this helps.

I just saw some white vinyl background at a rental studio recently- I'll try to find out the vendor, but it was awesome- only 8' though, but washable and bulletproof.

I too have been using like a Vinyl type paper when white is needed, it is awesome and can be cleaned really easy.It is white only but I shoot 70% on white backgrounds.
I also using formica white/Black and grey for the floor on top of the paper and it makes the white paper last for ever....

I am not sure if my studio is humid but I stack my papers long ways up and have all the Bogen rollers when in use and I always seem to have wavies in the paper, specially with grey.
No matter what I do it never seems to stay flat and smooth. Usually have to throw some surface bur or medium filter in post to clean it all up..
Bowing should be easy to solve just use and kind of poll like wood or piping.
When I was staring out I use a downl wood pole with holes on the end and put string through them and hung that from the ceiling with planter style type hooks from the ceiling which work great if your ceilings are low enough.

In my day, all you could find in the UK were 9ft widths of roll; I used to have a separate set of the vertical poles on which I hung, horizontally, the rolls not being used, and these all had conduit tubing (metal) down the centre; no problems with that. The only solution with white, pre-PS, was to overlight the background and hope you didn´t get enough spill to kill the subject.

DENNY.  it was a Denny product- along with some poles that the stuff sat on that are HUGE.  Maybe a good solution, although only 10' wide.
