Epson 7900 replacement update.

I received the new 7900 a few days ago and just finished swapping out the old one. After the initial install I upgraded firmware to latest version then turned off auto cleaning. My next step was to initiate auto media tracking BUT the option is not there. Epson support will not be available till Monday so I'll have to wait till then to ask why.

After setup was complete I printed a 16x24 on the supplied double weight matt then switched to prem glossy to print the same image. To my surprise, prior to printing the second image, the 7900 proceeds to go through a cleaning cycle! This I do not understand as I had set auto cleaning to off.

Hopefully I'll get some answers come Monday. - Paul

My 7900 goes through a cleaning cycle when I change black inks, even if the auto cleaning option is turned off. I assume you did since you switched from matte paper to premium glossy.

I trigger cleaning after MK->PK switch as well. I think it is done "by design" to clean remains of matte black. What I was wondering though is that the Job Monitor application showed, that the following print used about 10+ ml ink more than usual for similar sized glossy print, which is more than what manual says about black inks switch.

The manual is probably a little optimistic. And the cleaning cycle may have failed once of twice which increases the amount of ink used throughout the cleaning process.

My job history shows that my last ink switches have used incredible amounts of ink (30ml+). I think I need to call Epson tech support...

Ok. after talking with Epson I (embarrassingly) discovered that to access the "auto media tracking" function, you need to make this choice before loading paper. The menu option does not show once paper has been loaded.

I didn't mention the auto cleaning concern because of one response to the fact that auto cleaning may have been triggered because of changes from Mblk to Pblk (or visa versa) However since starting up this printer it has gone through 5 cleaning cycles entirely on it's own. Three of those have happened while switching between MB and PB the other two initiated after the message "auto nozzle check"

If this is Epsons solution to preventing clogging then I am a little miffed at the expense I will incur for ink usage during these cycles.

This should probably go under a new thread but I don't want to sound anti Epson (their service has been great) however there were a couple of things that helped me decide to replace our 7600 with the 7900. Which are:
- was told by sales rep that clog issues were resolved. (that still remains to be seen)
- was also told that the 7900 was twice as fast as the 7600. (yes, even though the 7900 is 2x as fast while printing, the time it takes for start up, option changes, cleaning, etc. are over 2x longer, so production speed remains the same or less  depending on the number of cleaning cycles.)
- was told that auto cleaning could be switched off. (apparently not)

After ~1 week of running the new replaced 7900 and a dozen or so prints later the printer has started clogging. The previous printer would only show one or two colours clogged but this one had every colour except orange clogged and by as much 80%.
Out of curiosity (because of another discussion) I used the "two colour" cleaning cycle. Next nozzel check showed all colours clog free. Why have a two colour choice when it executes all colour cleaning?

So the replacement printer has clogging issues far worse than the previous one. Epson has sent me a set of ink cartridges to make up for wasted ink form cleaning however the issue is yet to be resolved.

Just got off the phone with tech support and this time they've decided to send a tech rep to my location. Why they didn't do that the first time I have no idea.

For those who have had a technician replace parts etc., did one visit resolve the clogging or did it take more than one visit?
