Just a heads up for those of you with USB tethering woes that rumors indicate 10.5.7 will be released Friday. I'll be testing it upon release to see if it addresses the OSX USB driver issue affecting USB tethering right now which causes the tethering application to freeze after around 105 raw files. So stay tuned and cross your fingers.

Note for anyone confused: this only applies to USB-tethering so the 1Ds II, and Phase One backs are not affected

Hopefully this will fix the issue with running Spectraview software on a G5 as well.

The tethering from USB cameras is not affecting just Canon, but Nikon , others as well. I have to run BootCamp and XP to shoot in my studio into Lightroom with a Canon 5DII. Hope it's fixed with 10.5.7!

I hope they fixed all the misery causing Photoshop to constantly crash on my spanking new MacPro  (to begin with).

I'm 196 RAW frames into tethering with a 5D II. No lockup yet.

Still testing...

update: 350 frames and counting. Previously lockups occurred around 110 raw file frames.

More testing is warranted; however, it looks like the bug has been fixed.

Is the transfer speed reasonably good?

I don't have a 1Ds III right now, and all of my benchmarks are on the 1Ds III. So I can't compare directly. Maybe someone with 10.5.6 and a 5D II and a Mac Pro can run this test so we have a useful comparison (or someone can do their own before and after 10.5.7 test).

5D II, Mac Pro (8 core x 3.0 ghz), 7 gb ram, stock hard drive
 - 39 frames / 1 min
 - 69 frames / 2 min
 - 7.9 seconds from capture to fully resolved preview

As a reference point: P30+ (31.6 mp) on the same computer:
 - 44 frames / 1 min
 - 86 frames / 2 min
 - 7.7 sec from capture to fully resolved preview

I'll be doing a full set of speed trials as soon as I have a chance with the P40+, P30+, 5D II, and 1Ds III. It's always interesting seeing the difference in choices here: the dSLRs allow very fast shot-to-shot times for a buffer-sized number of frames, and then crawl to a stand still while the P+ backs have a *relatively* limited shot-to-shot time but are extremely consistent in speed even under the heaviest shooting.

Purely unscientific, just me and a stopwatch, but from shot to full preview on my Macbook (white body) is averaging about 8.5 seconds. Macbook config is: 2.16ghz, 4GB ram, 320gb 7200rpm internal drive, 10.5.7 and C1 4.8.

From 0 to full buffer (13 images or whenever it first says "busy") to all previews drawn is averaging about 38 seconds (shutter at 1/125). I've captured about 175 test images so far without any issues.

Just updated to 10.5.7 and newest version of Canon Utility and all is working well.

My main problem has been that when using "Live View" tethered the software would freeze up after a few frames and would have to completely restart the laptop and camera each time. No problems so far.

I noticed that when using tethered "Live View" I can't use the camera's shutter release, only the computer to capture an image. But If I turn of the "Live View" on the back of the camera as well it works fine. Pretty sure it was the case when using the old software as well.

As for speed of download I can't tell that there's any difference between this version and the old for my 1Ds III tethered to a MacBook Pro, about 4.5sec, which is still double what it used to be with 10.5.5.

Cheers,

Derryck.

Early days, but 10.5.7 installed without a glitch, then I used the Canon 5DMKII tethered and with a hot folder to link with Lightroom and everything was working perfectly as far as I could tell. I also installed the latest Canon upgrades (EOS Utility update 2.6.1) just before upgrading to 10.5.7. I tried just over 150 consecutive pictures, some in very rapid bursts of 10/15, and it didn't crash, so it appears to be fixed now. Before it used to crash at around 100 pictures.

But most importantly to me, I also tried my Leaf software (which was working fine before the upgrade) and it all seemed to work just as good after the upgrade.

Happy so far.

Edward

PS. I recommend that you download the Combo update, it took me around 5 minutes to download. I hear some people have had trouble updating through the Apple Software Update menu, probably due to overload.

So glad this is working out. I am shooting tomorrow but it is stills not beauty.

Interesting facts about the speeds. Mine are right in there too around 4-5 seconds for a draw time. I also noticed the Hasselblad 39+39II while having a slow shot to shot rate didn't bog down and was very consistent in writes to disc via firewire.
