Good point-and-shoot needed

I'd consider waiting a few weeks until the Sigma DP2 comes out.  IF the sensor can handle decent ISO ranges and they really do ficx the software, it's without a doubt going to produce the cleanest images of any P&S camera.

The Fuji in high-ISO/double sensor mode is only a bit over 3.1MP.  It really looks like film, or close to it - but it's even worse than the Sigma at 4.6MP Though in both cases, they could be considered "real" pixels, or close to it.  Film, btw, scanned at a DLAB or similar is roughly 3000x2000.  Full color, though, so figure 4500X3000 on a Bayer sensor.  13.5MP pocket cameras aren't *quite* out yet.  But the DP2 at 2,652×1,768 is pretty close to 3000X2000.

OTOH, the Fuji has the 12MP mode for outdoor shots and a ton of other features...

Because I can't carry my DSLR everywhere, I'd like to get a P&S that can create high quality images. I'd like at lease 10 MP and RAW capability - an extensive zoom range is not that important. The Canon G10 looks good, any other possibilities I should look at?

Peter,

Get either the Canon G9 or G10.  Get the G9 for zoom range 35-200mm or the G10 for range 28-140mm .   These cameras have an electronic shutter that syncs up to 1/2000th as long as you are using a non-Canon strobe.  This means that you can use flash lighting outdoors in sunshine, something that you can't do with most DSLR cameras.   Therefore you will be not only getting the convenience of a P&S, but you will have a vastly superior camera for outside shooting with people, something you can't do with D3X, A900, 5DII, etc.
