hacking the 1D Mark III "Minimum Shutter" value?
« on: February 07, 2009, 12:15:42 pm »

I've just come back from a 4-day visit to the earthquake area of Sichuan in China. we were visiting with children affected by the earthquake. I was one of the photographers on the trip.

during photography, I set the 1D Mark III to Av mode, and set the minimum Shutter value to 1/60th, the fastest value allowed. unfortunately, 1/60th is too slow for many situations where the subject is moving (including simple head movements) resulting in motion blur.

in many cases where motion blur was apparent, the ISO value was relatively low, sometimes as low as 400. the camera only adjusts the ISO if the minimum shutter speed can not be maintained, in this case wasting many a great opportunity to get an ideal photograph.

I could of course set the ISO range to something like 800-3200 or even 1250-3200 but that would waste potential detail at lower ISO values when the available light allows such (perfectionism is a curse).

does anyone know of any hacks to increase the fastest value allowed for the Minimum Shutter value? 1/125 would be nice. 1/250 would be better.

cheers,
Gregory

Hmm, are we talking about autoISO mode or what?
You never mentioned anything about that, only that you set it to Av.

Have you checked the documentation for the camera? Does it say anything about the settings that can be applied?

Perhaps I'm missing something, but it would seem you would be better in shutter priority mode?

I like to control the depth of field.

interestingly enough, Canon allows you to select any aperture you like for both the Min and Max Aperture Range values. unfortunately, the same does not apply to the Shutter Range values.

given a choice between better depth of field and sharper pictures, I guess in low light, Tv would be the safer choice though.
