Anyone familiar with Polaroid and fujifilm 4x5???
« on: November 06, 2008, 02:08:59 am »

I need to purchase these before next year. But I am not familiar with film, can anyone help me? It says...

7.  Studio Imaging Specifics  (Essential – must be purchased by week two)

Option 1 – if available

Polaroid film back for 4”X5” camera Type 405.  For this film back you need to purchase Polaroid Film Type 664, ISO 200 (2X10 sheets/box).

Option 2

FujiFilm PA-45 Film Holder for 4”x5” Instant Peel-Apart Film.  For this film back you need to purchase FujiFilm FP-100C45 Instant Colour Print Film (10 sheets/pack) ISO 100, 4X5” and a Colour Conversion Filter, Type Cokin Z-Pro Series 80A Blue, 100mmX100mm.

Option 3 – if available

Polaroid Film, Type 54, Black & White, for 4’X5” Sheet Film Holder (20 sheets/box).  You don’t need to purchase the film holder.

Do they mean that I should purchase only one Option? They havent replied my email...

What is this? Polaroid film back for 4”X5” camera Type 405.

Do I need to purchase a 4x5 camera in order to use this film?

Is the film holder necessary for all items above?

Which is the cheapest option to go for?

Thank you.

I assume this is for a photography course? I think that's what they mean - one of the options. Since Polaroid is out of business now, it leaves you with Fuji only. I'm not sure why they have the third option. Option 3 does require you to have a 4x5 camera, since the film is used in regular 4x5 filmholders. I don't think there's any Polaroid film available, except people selling off their hoards. Most medium format cameras with removable backs can use instant film with dedicated adapters, which take Polaroid or Fuji pack film. You could probably get the best information here:

Hey, thanks for the quick reply. Is it possible to use option 2 together with a hasselblad 503CW? I'm not very familiar with film backs.... they are polaroid around asia, but dont think the price will be that reasonable.

You would need the specific Polaroid back for the Hasselblad, not the PA-45. But perhaps you should check with the course teachers first. Maybe they want you to shoot on a 4x5 camera?

yes, i was thinking about that... need to check with them. But i'm looking for the cheapest alternative here, because film isnt my choice of medium, its just compulsory subject.

Cheapest is pack film. If you can use a Hasselblad Polaroid adapter, they are easily available on eBay.

The Hasselblad  number for the "PolaPlus" magazine is 30200..it will cost about $100 USD, used.

i'm not looking forward to spend a fortune on film. Other forum suggested me to go for Option 1... btw, i dont need to purchase a 4x5 camera. They will supply.

btw is the type 54 better in terms of pricing because it says i dont need a film holder.  ... which i assume film holder is pretty expensive?

Option 1: The 405 holder is available on eBay easily, but Polaroid film isn't available any more.

Option 2: Probably the best option.

I don't remember if the Fuji pack film works with the 405 film holder. If it works, that would be the best. The holders are available cheap on eBay, and Fuji instant film is also easily available.

Option 3: Type 54 film works with the 545 Polaroid holder, so if they say you don't need the holder, it probably means that they will supply it. But no film is currently made, so what would you do with the holder?

Cheers,
Kumar
