Actually, its because the canon 5DII offers 9mpx more and HD 1080p video for about the same price as the D700. With that much bang for the buck, the D700 loses the fight against the 5D.
Because of this, I hope we will have an answer from Nikon by november. I'm interested to seen if they offer another alternative (since I prefer Nikons wide-angle lenses over Canons, otherwise it would be a done deal)
regards,
Mike

Regarding the extra MP, it will undoubtedly offer more resolution, but the cost (relative to what would have otherwise been possible or what the D700 currently offers) in terms of file sizes, increase in noise at higher ISOs, and perhaps some loss of DR is as yet unknown. Now if your priorities are extra resolution, then all of this may be of little concern; but if you are a wedding, portrait or press photographer -- then probably the D700 is still the better option in terms of delivering a file that meets your requirements.
Regarding the video feature, well some of us really don't want it and would prefer to simply pay less and not have it. What's more (for me anyway), I would prefer to have fewer rather than more items in the menu to deal with. If that's important to you though, then I understand why you would value the D700 less today than you did before the 5DII announcement.
I'm reasonably certain that you will get both more resolution than the D700 has and some kind of video feature in the next Nikon, and that camera will be announced before the end of the year. On the other hand, as I already wrote, I wouldn't be surprised if it cost more than the 5DII. I would not get too hung up on the actual number of megapixels, from what I've read pixel acuity can make a big difference vis-a-vis a simple measurement of the number of pixels.
My own feeling is that I wouldn't want to be standing on the sidelines waiting to invest in lenses until the "perfect" camera comes along, that's why I mentioned that I'm currently shooting with a D300 right now as I purchase several thousand dollars in lenses. If I were you though, then I would just buy the 5DII; in fact, I would get on a waiting list for one now.
