HP Dream Color
« on: September 13, 2008, 09:03:45 pm »

I am looking at a new laptop in the near future so have started the research process.

From a color management perspective is this likely to be any good or just a sales pitch?

Has it been tested?

How easy it to be calibrated?

Considering most laptop screens are TN panels it should be, at worse, decent.

It seems to be a very interesting monitor. Considering wide gamut and LCD backlight, I'd rather recommend a spectrophotometer as a calibration/profiling device.

The spec's on the HP are impressive. I know Karl Lang has one coming for testing. I wouldn't run out and buy one. First, its not necessarily aimed at still photo work (it IS aimed for the film industry, one of HP's partners was DreamWorks, hence the name). I'm not sure what kind of software support there is for the types of work we calibrate towards. I'm not saying this isn't an impressive unit (I've seen one in action), just that I don't think anyone here wants to rush out and drop the bucks on one until its been evaluated. I'll wait on Karl.

Thanks Andrew. I was wondering who might be testing.

A whole bunch of us color geeks on the Colorsync list have ordered this display.

We'll see how it goes. I'm sure that if the units live up to their specs, HP will get a lot of favorable recommendations.
