iPhone with MFDB?
« on: August 27, 2008, 09:33:09 pm »

With all the recent talk about using an iPhone to view images from an MFDB, I thought you might be interested in a post from Ted Chavalas of Panoscan on the Betterlight forum. Note that it is about using an iPhone to control the Betterlight, but maybe some of you can figure out a few more tricks.

Greetings,

Recently we had some Panoscan customers asking for a way to operate
ViewFinder from a remote control.  After running into some dead ends
with various Wireless USB hubs on Mac...  We discovered that remote
VNC screen sharing works surprisingly well with an iPhone.  (Or iPod
Touch) You get full control of your camera's computer via WiFi.

You need to enable screen sharing on your Mac or PC.  You also need a
VNC client for the iPhone.  I recommend Mocha VNC. ($5.95)  VNC Lite
also works OK... but you can't rotate the screen on the free version.
Your computer will also need a WiFi transceiver.  (Most Laptop
machines have it built in.)  You can download the VNC client from the
iTunes application store.

I made a demo video of what it looks like to run your Better Light
camera on an iPhone.

So far so good, ill update everyone real soon on how to set up the vnc connection through their mac its real simple.

Ok everything seems to work on LC11

I can see a preview a couple seconds seconds after it is sent to the mac, I can also see a 100% view via the zoom tool.

The great part about this is that its vnc, so you can communicate with an assistant or digital tech at the computer so you can see the results you want faster.     This means everyone can be huddled around the machine and you can have your iphone seeing the preview you need.

Its not the perfect solution, but everything I tested seemed like it will work for many people especially considering its a $6 application!

Im getting ready to go to bed, before i do here is how to set up the vnc access.

1. GO to the system preferences
2. Now select sharing
3. check apple remote access (under the services tab)
4. select access privileges and set accordingly
5. I highly recommend using a password for obvious reasons
6. the access ip will also be displayed on this menu page.

enjoy!

VNC oftens uses reduced bit depth or image compression to allow faster screen refresh rates. This would be undesirable and it's not clear from the video what settings are used.

I'm not sure what problem this solves. You couldn't put this in the hands of a client while you are shooting (they could so easily change settings and cause other problems by clicking randomly around your tethering app) and the interface is probably too slow for the photographer to use (pity about that). Given that you are only a few metres away from the tethered computer, that would be a better option.

So is there a realistic use for this, other than 'coolness'?

It is cool but I agree you have to have a computer anyway on set so shooting tethered makes a lot more sense. Now without a computer than we have something. But I do love folks experimenting like this , you just never know what will come from it.  Now If I can hook a 15 ft cord to my Iphone and back on location than that maybe useful for clients on set.

I get the impression that a lot of photographers here are actually concerned about the "coolness" of things!   But controlling the computer with the iPhone is like a remote control for the TV, no? It might have its uses

Graham and all others that are concerned about settings being changed-

you can allow the iphone to simply be an observer, and not allow it to change settings or close applications.

I actually posted this in another thread a long time ago..
But seeing how Phase C-1 you only need to do Command K to fire the camera, Wouldn't it be easy to put some kind of bluetooth script in the iphone to do that?
??
Thanks for any info.
