"Archival Matte Paper" profile problem or What ?

I have just tested The Epson "Archival Matte Paper"
(still this name in EU) for the first time in my life.

I print with Epson R2880
(from Illustrator-CS3 with the profiles delivered with the printer.)

I compare this paper to Epson "Matte Heavyweight paper"
(also still this name in EU). I used this "Matte Heavyweight paper"
with my 1280 and got great blacks. Although the R2880 is very good
at dark gradations (much much better than the 1280) it seems to have
severe problems with the color BLACK.  

The "Archival Matte Paper" can not take all ink in black areas.

The black ink sticks to the surface. I have also printed with "Color Density -10%"
it helps but the other colors are a bit washed out and the blacks are
still not as good as on the "Matte Heavyweight paper" (with the same R2880).

Otherwise the prints on these two papers looks the same.
(But "Matte Heavyweight paper" softproofs darker than
"Archival Matte Paper" in Ps-CS3. Strange !   )

 Are you using the Matte Black ink or the Photo Black ? On this paper you need Matte Black.

Whats your print workflow?  I have a new 2880 and I have ran into what I think are driver issues when printing over a network is involved.   Occasionally I get oddball results.  When I remove any drivers that were installed over the network, reboot, and print directly over USB the problems seem to go away.

Are you using the latest drivers?  There is an update available already.

Please print a black area on both Arcival and Hevyweight.
Then see if there is some black ink left on the surface of The Archival Paper.

(On my Heavyweght all ink seems to have gone into the paper but on the
Archival there is ink left on the surface.)

the ICC profile doesn't determine the ink weight on the media. Can you screen grab your settings for both medias? Maybe I can test it here.

nothing wrong there.

i would suggest setting a lower DPI (720x720) which will use a lower VSD and slightly less ink. test that and see if it helps, if not there might be an over inking issue with the driver setting for Archival Matte Paper.

(I have no tested 720x720.)

I have tested the "Archival Paper" with the same settings as for the
"Heavyweight Matte" (the Heavyweight Matte profile also)  this comes out
just the same as before.

And as I said before even with "Color Density -10%" there is some ink left
on the surface. So just reducing ink somewhat will not help.

It must be the paper. This paper seems to have been a flop.

The Heavyweight Matte Paper just has anoter coating (so it seems)
made for Dye ink to penetrate. And now it turns out to be better
for pigment ink too. Better longevity for the Heavyweight Matte also.

I could not believe it was that bad.

Time for a real replacement of this paper ( not just renaming) !

And why not skip this pigmentink.

Let us have 8-color DYE-INK instead.

 

If I try The Epson Ultrasmooth will the black ink stick to the surface
as with Archival matt ?

The problem seems to be solved !

When I print on "Archival Matte Paper" with
DRYING TIME set to 50 (max) the balcks is
rather good (much better than with default
drying time).

(print time  5x7" is 12 minutes)

The Blacks on "Heavy Weight Paper" are totally smooth.
The Blacks on "Archival Matte Paper" are not but on the
hand other they "are" deeper (so probably higher Dmax)
and also more detail in the blacks.

Known Issues: In areas of heavy ink coverage, can see "mottling" or
"splotchiness" esp. when print is viewed at an angle. Doesn't affect
thicker cotton papers.


So It IS The PAPER !  


(but max drying time helps !)
