Lens Distortion Software
« on: May 15, 2008, 06:58:06 pm »

Hi All,

I need to find a program that calibrates and then facilitates lens distortion removal.

I need to work it out for my Alpa/Schneider lenses with rise applied.

The final application is for pano-stitching for cases that are beyond what can be achieved by any of the inbuilt distortion removers in the major panoramic stitching programs. I am stitching 8 or 9 frames together with perfectly straight horizons and want to try correcting the distortion before using the stitching software

Has anyone had experience with PTLENS or similar?

Cheers

Ptlens is considered on of the standards.  If he doesn't have a profile for your lens, he will create one as long as you shoot a targer for him.

The problem is "with rise applied", which makes the distortions and CA nonuniform. For example, I don't own your camera, but on big rises and a DSLR-T/S lens there is more CA at the top than the bottom and software has problems dealing with this. one method I have had pretty good luck woth is by applying the CA correction to a snapshot and blending in the top half gradually. There are other approaches to this approach too. That is quick for me. PTLens has a rather involved method which you used to be able to find on their website.

Hi Kirk,

thankfully the CA with these lenses is minimal - nothing like the Canon TSE (which I also use).

I am pursuing the ptlens option.

I think that if you use rise, you would need to calibrate a lens for that exact amount of rise. Highly impractical.

Hi Willem,

I'm getting by far the best results with Auto Pano Pro, but I have been trying all 3.

Hi Graham,

yes impractical but necessary!

Hi Rainer,

I will try...

With Acolens you should be able to create your own profiles.

The pricetag ($495 for the full version) lets it appear professional, however, I don't know the product.

I am waiting for C1 4.? (PRO) to have a barrel distortion tool, I'm disappointed to see the 4.1 has some lens color correction but not that.

I suppose that in the future raws can "come out" clean of lens defects if we want it to, just by dialing an Auto-Lens-Correction dial in the camera. Some sort of fly by wire of photography (or fly by micro processor and algorithms)

... and cameras will be smart enough to know how much shift you have, no?
