Any one use this - Cambo X2-Pro ?
« on: February 02, 2008, 06:11:08 pm »

The weakest link in my system are the lenses. I'm thinking of using this http://www.calumetphoto.com/item/CB4600K1/  with my 1ds mklll, and either Schneider or Rodenstock digital lenses. I've been riding the fence about purchasing a digital medium format camera for my architectural photography, this seems like a great way to get in the door. I could purchase the lenses now and use them with my Canon, and if I choose to upgrade to a medium format system I'm able to use the same lenses.

I'm curious if any one else has tried this combination before?

i havent tryid it but informed me a little bit, hope that i am right here.
the problem are the wides with this systems. calumet claims that  you can use the 28mm schneider lense,- this is only true if you use the 28 digitar which is by far the worthest lens from them. its unsymmetric, unsharp and very distorted, same lens as the 28PC shift from schneider for 35mm.
all the other schneider and rodenstock wa lenses dont have enough distance from the chip  in the canon/ nikon. so you can only use normal or tele lenses which does not has too much sense for architecture work.
better you look for a zoerk adapter with pentax 645 mount, the 35mm af lens from pentax is excellent and you could combine it with a olympus 24 shift,- if you find one in ebay.

Rainer,

Thanks for your input. I want to be able to use the Rodenstock 28hr or the Schneider 24 unfortunately it sounds as if focusing will be a problem. I know I need to go wider than 35mm for my work. Is the problem not enough distance, or not being able to get close enough to the chip? The first could be solved with a larger bellows, but I think the problem with focusing in not being able to get the lens close enough to the chip to focus.

I already own a zoerk adapter, and I want to avoid spending more money on different lenses that are mismatched, and (if I need shift) are limited to my 35mm system.

Too bad, it seemed too good to be true!

Thanks for your input.

You cant get these wide lenses close enough to the chip to get infinity focus becues the mirror box of the canon (and all other DSLRs) will get in the way

the schneider website has some diagram of thier lenses with the rear element to focal plane distances

A lense like a 65 you would get away with I think and could get quite wide coverage if you were prepared to stitch maybe nine images !

The '28' quote on that website is indeed very misleading, beacuse the 28 they refer to is indeed a retrofocus DSLR lense that was reverse engineered to fit bellows cameras that were being used with early MFDBs like the eyelike11 which had a 35mm size chip

The Cambo X-2 is pretty sweet and made very well with super fine and smooth movements.   Calumet hasn't been selling very many of them and might be willing to make you a deal on one.

Calumet Chicago also has a used Schneider 28 digitar in the display cabinet.   I took the 28 home a few weeks ago to test on my Ultima with my 1ds2 and with my Phase backs - it worked pretty well and seemed pretty sharp but not any better then a 16-35.   Popped it into a copal and tested it with the phase backs - it took a bit to get it to focus as its pretty dark and tough to see but it covered with a bit of vignette.

Calumet also has the X-2 in rental as well as a 28 digitar - you should just rent it and test it out to see if it will work for you or not.
