8800F vs. G4050
« on: December 27, 2007, 06:40:38 pm »

Hi

I'm planning to buy a scanner for scanning 120 chromes and negatives, and of course 35mm here and there (but that's less important)

I have searched around which models are available to me right now, where I live, and based on by budget, I have narrowed it down to two scanners from the topic title.

I'm not sure how they compare.

Now here are the things that are important to me:
-resolution
right now I have a Canon 4200F, and it's pretty bad regarding resolution, like expected. I'm not expecting much more from these two, but I hope there is at least some change. I hope that optics in 8800F are not the same ones as in 4200F and that I'd be able to see some improvement over 4200F, but I guess for 120, even if it stayed the same it would be acceptable for the time being.
I have no idea how HP would compare in resolution.
-dynamic range
4200F has a really hard time scanning slides, because of the noise in shadows.
Any improvement over that would be welcome in these two scanners.
I wonder if the 6-color option in HP helps with noise and dynamic range

what is NOT important to me is this:
-scanning software profiles
I usually scan everything as flat and dull as possible, and work from there, and if there are any profiles I usually bypass everything and work in PS for that.
Specially with negatives. If I have the time, I like working from scratch, removing orange mask manually and setting the curve to my liking.

-speed
I have all day, and life is long.
I only care about image quality, so speed is not a consideration.
Of course if image quality is the same, I'd take the faster one, but
not over image quality

So, which do you think would be better considering the things that I need
them for?

Oh and by the way, I shoot a lot of 120 chromes, but negatives too,
specially in 35mm. No black and white, at least not now.

thanks
