Fixing moire in fabric - how?
« on: December 08, 2007, 11:22:54 pm »

I recently moved to a h3d-22 and found that every shot i took would have some sort of moire in fabrics (I shoot a lot of portraits, fashion and interiors). I cannot find any tab or feature in flexcolor that allows me to reduce the effect.

How do I go about fixing this?

Go to : [a href=\"http://www.russellbrown.com/tips_tech.html]http://www.russellbrown.com/tips_tech.html[/url] and scroll down near the bottom and see
"Moire Go Away" That method should help a lot.

Thanks Wolfman.

I was hoping that it was possible to fix it in-camera or at least at raw level before saving as tiff or jpeg. Looks like I've gotta do it like russell brown or through the LAB mode eh.

There's really nothing that can be done other than:

stop the lens down so much that you're diffraction limiting,
use really poor lenses that don't have enough resolution to cause moiré,
or to buy a camera that has an optical low pass filter fitted.

I have been having similar issues with an H1 with an eMotion 22 back.  I think what you are looking for may be the Caprock anti moire filters  ( see http://www.caprockdev.com/antimoire.htm ). I have been meaning to try one, but as yet I havent.  I would be interested to hear if anyone has tried them.

The new Phocus software should be out any day now and it has an anti-moire thingy which apparently is quite effective. It will be a free download for your Hassy.

Sure, there's some software where you can define areas and reduce chroma moire, but you're basically just desaturating / blurring it out of existance. The only really effective, non-manual way to fix moire is to never let it into the system in the first place....

As soon as my copy of Phocus arrives and is working I'll let you know how effective it is (IMO) at removing moire. The sales people I have talked to (naturally they're biased) claim its "quite a leap forward". If it's a mere step I'll be grateful.

There's scant detail of Phocus on their site. Be interesting to see how it works in real life, so if you can post up some images, that'd be super!

Happy to. Mind you, it will probably be after Xmas. (During Xmas I will attempt to consume some "liquid anti-moire" - beats Phocus or any other wonder cure  at making it all less noticeable...)

The best moire fixer I've found is actually the pluggin that comes with Capture One. You might see if you have a friend with the software, if you don't own it. The pluggin is almost worth doing the Capture One trial (not the beta 4 version).
