What CF for 1Ds Mark III?
« on: December 04, 2007, 10:24:37 am »

What CF cards are you guys using for the 1Ds Mark III?

I had been using 5 2GB Sandisk Ultra II cards (3 newer and 2 older) for my Mark I, but the Mark III won't format 3 of the cards--the 3 newer ones ironically.  What is up with that?

Anyway, I knew I was going to have to upgrade to 4 or even 8 GB cards for the larger files from the Mark III and right now I'm looking at the 4 GB Sandisk Extreme IV CFs.

Any recommendations for what is reliable in the the Mark III?

Finally, is it a bad idea to mix and match cards between cameras (use a card in both the Mark I and Mark III if necessary)?  Or should I dedicate the 2 GB Ultras to the Mark I and get a whole new set for the Mark III?   FWIW, I always reformat cards in camera before each job.

Have you tried to format those cards on PC and then use them on the camera? I had the same on a 5D with one of my 2Gb Ultra II a few weeks ago,

i had a similar problem with  a brand new ultra II 2 gig card:  the card would not format in either the ds3 or the 5d ...interestingly it did format in my leaf back.  all of the new 4 and 8 gig sandisk extreme III and IV cards as well as a few i had used in the 5d, formatted without incident.

Hi George,

Well, I tried to do what I think is the Mac reformat with Disk Utility and still had no success.

Canmiya, Thanks.  It looks like a few people have had this issue with the Ultra II's so I will look into the Extreme IV 4GB's.

I have been using 5 8GB Sandisk Ultra II cards ( 2 older from fry's and 3 newer from B&H) all work in my 1DmkII, 1DsmkII, and 1DmkIII but the 3 newer from B&H will not work in my 1DSMKIII no matter what.

Sounds like a problem with the camera firmware. However, as most CF cards have a lifetime warranty, I would start with Sandisk customer service. Could be cheaper than buying new cards and might get to the bottom of the problem.

As a follow up, I purchased 4 Sandisk Extreme IV 4GB cards and they work fine.  I appears that many people are having trouble with  the Ultra 2 cards with the Mark III.

I needed to upgrade the capacity anyway for the larger file size and so I'm fine with needing to purchase the Extreme IV's.
