suggestion for point-shoot camera?
« on: November 14, 2007, 03:41:32 am »

I am looking for a point-and-shoot camera for general purpose shooting when traveling.  Ideally, it should have minimal shutter lag and decent optics.  Any recommendations?
Thanks.

If the G9 is too big for your purposes and you want something to fit in your pocket better, the Fujifilm FinePix F30/F40/F50 line.

I can't remember the model, but after surveying the possibilities, my wife bought the Canon with IS.  It's tiny and hard to fault results.  She finds it really handy with very satisfying results, and after owning a studio for nearly two decades, she's certainly discriminating.  It wouldn't be my choice for general landscape because I find the manual controls awkward, but as the general purpose pocket camera you seek, it should do very well.  And the IS had proven very effective.

I concur with the Canon Powershot G9 suggestion.

I feel that the GX-100 is currently the best offering out there.

It is far from perfect, mostly because of its noisy Sony sensor, but that sensor is shared with most of the competition (including the Canon G9).

An interesting, but bulkier alternative, is the Nikon D40+ lens kit.

Regards,
Bernard

I would also recommend you look at the G9.  My purposes match yours pretty closely, and I've been happy mine.
