G9 v GR-Digital v GX100
« on: October 31, 2007, 12:58:14 pm »

I am looking for a quality compact that will take RAW to use when my digital SLR's are too big to lug around. I have narrowed my search down to these three and would appreciate any views on which would be most suitable. I will shoot mainly landscapes and so telephoto zoom range is not so important. I suppose what I am looking for is the best image quality I can get in a compact (which I know will not be as good as my DSLRs).

If I have missed out any other compacts that will take RAW please let me know!

Cheers

I have been looking for one as well...from my research so far, the G9 is a great all round camera, but the lens is not exceptional (i think the G6/G7 lens is sharper). If you want to compare GX 100 vs G9 (both are zooms) - i think G9 is a better buy....

The fixed lens P&S on the ohter hand, (GRD II) seems to be very interesting...its about $700 bucks...a bit too steep...maybe, the GRD will soon be discounted soon or keep looking for a good used one...

anyways - i wonder why Tier 1 manufacturers just dont take the hint and make a good P&S with great lens....(like the GRD). The DP1 seems to be too far off and i have doubts about the manufacturer...

Leica and Panasonic make one as well...but they are even more expensive!

I liked the idea of the Ricoh and the Panny/Leica too but they were all as noisy at higher ISOs or worse than the G9 appeared, plus they are really too small for me to be comfortable shooting.  The G9 is small enough, large enough for a nice shooting experience.  I shoot with the 5D and too many lenses LOL--and have considered a smaller cam for a number of years--had the original G1.  The G9 fits the bill for non-critical shooting, IR, and I'll probably shoot some more casual shots and b/w--all in RAW.  I even added a little Kirk L to the G9 for IR shooting (figuring its going to tag along for that when I carry the 5D) and it gives me just that much more 'geography' on the left to be comfortable.

IQ is quite good for the size sensor and RAW in ACR or LR pulls more from it--and a bit of Noiseware Pro at ISO400/800 makes most of those usable at smaller print sizes and def. for web.

My personnal pick is the GX-100 since wide angle photography is important for me.

Bernard

I seriously considered it Bernard--but the size/function of it overrode the 28mm and I succumbed and bought a WA converter for the G9 for occasional use.  Most of the time the 35mm is fine and I carry it 'naked' but the very small bag I have works fine for the Lensmate plus WA and is still almost unnoticeable for hiking--when I just no longer want to carry my 5D kit (unless its aimed at photography only). I also shoot mostly under 50mm so the range of the GX suits me better in truth--but in the end considered the whole camera and the way I would use it.  Others MMV.
