how do I combine multiple images in PS
« on: October 02, 2007, 11:54:38 pm »

I'll try this here. (I posted this in the beginners forum already) I want to combine several frames into one image of a moving subject. The camera was mounted on a tripod and not moved during the sequences. Focal length, exposure etc were not changed. Only the subject moved from left to right across the field of view. I'm sure this is not complicated but I'm not sure how to do it.
Thank you,
BB

Try copying each picture and pasting on which ever you choose as the base pic. It should create a separate layer for each picture pasted.
then you can start getting creative by varying opacity, creating masks and such.
Its best you just experiment and see what happens, that's the way to learn
enjoy

Check out Russel Browns site for his stack-a-matic (i think it's called) plus the video showing how it worked, I think that might do the trick.  I have a sneeky feeling that CS3 has something similar built in???  Wayne

This isn't all that difficult, so I hope the following helps:

1. assuming you are processing from RAW files, ensure that your conversion uses the same settings for each image so that the static parts of the image look the same in each image;

2. open all the images in PS;

3. select one image and then drag it into one of the other images (hold the shift key when you do so to ensure that the images are aligned);

4. repeat for the other images, by selecting and dragging them into the same base image;

That will give you one image with a stack of layers, where all the images are in perfect register.

5. Apply a hide all mask to each layer and then paint in with white in the mask to reveal the parts of each image that you want to show.

As an example of how this turns out, the following link will take you to an image I made using this technique during Easter this year (I was on a health kick at the time):
