Another damaged DTP94 question

I lost the little lens that covers the sensor on the bottom.  It was held on with a bayonet attachment.  It still seems to work but I don't trust the results anymore.  Does anybody know why the lens is removable, if the instrument works without it or any place I can buy another lens?
