Nikon D70s Filenaming
« on: September 25, 2007, 12:17:44 am »

Hi all, wondering if anyone has had any experience with a D70s acting like this: Lately my camera has been naming my files _DSC9999.nef, rather than DSC-9999.nef the way it used to. The truly strange part is that sometimes my first fifty or whatever images will be named properly, as DSC-9999, then the last bunch on the memory card will be _DSC9999, with the underscore preceding the name. It's not the end of the world, but it is a little aggravating, since my computer lists all the _DSC files first, to keep them in proper alphanumeric order. Anyone had the same thing happen? Any fix out there? Thanks a bunch.

You have changed the color mode from AdobeRGB to sRGB.

When a file is shot in AdobeRGB (modeII) it will not have the underscore before the filename.

The filename will be underscored when shot in mode1a or 111a which are both sRGB.

For raw it will not make a difference as the color mode does not affect raw files, just jpeg. I recommend detting it to AdobeRGB and leave it there so it is set if you decide to shoot jpeg.

As Rich mentioned, the cause is the colour space setting in the camera.  But do you really keep the files on your computer with the temporary filenames that the camera assigned to them?
If you rename them so they have the date/time at the beginning of the filename (e.g. 200708041747_DSC9999.NEF, but you can choose whatever system you like) then software will by default sort them into chronological order no matter what colour space you assign in the camera (and if you start using a second camera you won't care when both cameras end up using the same filenames).

Renaming like this can be done automatically by BreezeSys's Downloader Pro, by Lightroom, by Expression Media (nee iView MediaPro), and probably by lots of others also.

Cheers

Hey thanks. That did the trick. I don't know how I managed to change the colour space without realizing it. And thanks for the tip about renaming with the date. Seems like such an obvious thing to do now.

That happened to me a couple of times too when I was using a D70.  I never intentionally went anywhere near the menu option to change the color space after setting it to AdobeRGB the first time, so I think the camera's software would occasionally get confused and do it without my knowledge.  Don't know why.
