Fast glass for 645AFD/II
« on: August 26, 2007, 10:30:47 am »

I'm looking into the possibilities for some faster glass for the 645AFD/II for my location work.

I'm thinking about a 80mm 1.9 and one portret lens which is faster 120-200.

Think about 2.8 for the portrait.

What would your choices be ?
And where can I get adaptors for for example Zeiss lenses.

Hope someone is willing and can help

I have the 80 1.9 and it is a joy to work with.  There are two MF mamiya lenses you might wish to look at:
The 200 2.8 apo lens is a wonderful lens.  The closest focusing distance is about 8.5 feet; and the 150 2.8(uld) mf lens-closest focusing distance 4.75 feet.
hope this helps.

I need a close focus range probarbly 2-3 feet at least, it's mainly for portraits
That is the only thing I need to get used to to be honest.

I believe some zeiss glass have this option but it's such a jungle out there

This is why I kept the Hasselblad FE 2/110mm Planar T* lens for. However, I used it on Canon 1Ds MkII. I sold my Canon gear, but I kept FE 2/110mm Planar T* lens because I love it. I never thought I would use it with Mamiya, ever, as far as I am concerned FE 2/110mm Planar T* lens  is a keeper.

Unfortunately, you can't use flash with it, but it is beautiful, just beautiful rendering for life style outdoors. Perhaps, Rollei would have something faster that would work in the studio but they are priced through the roof.

Why can't you use it with flash ?
It can be stopped down manually I guess ?

My main use would be by the way outside not in the studio, I have the 120mm for that which is beautiful.

The 80 f1.9 is pretty sweet. I haven't used it much but it's sick wide open.

I'd like to know what you come up with in the 110-150 range in the way of fast stuff. I use the 150 f4 a ton and love it but I'd kill for something in the 2.8 range.

I just "won" a 150mm F3.5 AF on Ebay for $342,00 including shopping so I guess that's sweat deal to complement the 120mm macro manual.

I was more looking at some exotic glass like zeiss but I saw this and did not want to pass.

I did not mention this lens in my initial reply as you indicated you were looking for something around 2.8.  I don't know if you realize it, but the closest focusing distance with this lens is about 4.75 feet.
I'll be interested in hearing what you think of this lens: I have had it for sometime and rarely use it.

I know.
But for that price I could not resist
Sometimes it's just not handy to use the 120mm manual in sessions and I would love to get something like that on AF, I hope the 150mm will come closer than the 105-210.

when i had mamiya, i felt the 210 was superior to the 200/2.8 apo and it autofocuses too, although not fast at f4.0. the 150 af is very sharp too with nice bokeh. i too have the 110/2.0 and it is in a different league. son did have one for sale and it may still be available; he was selling it under contax 645 equipment on ebay, but with another adapter, it will work on mamiya.

the zeiss lenses with shutters cannot use the leaf shutters on the mamiya 645 afd series. i believe the older mamiya leaf shutter lenses will work, but you need a double cable release to trigger the leaf shutter and the focal plane shutter as i recall.

I mean it depends whether you need to sync fill-in flash at > 1/90th, 1/125th or... If you're hoping to hand hold, I would think that you might (and even if not, a higher sync may be useful). Since the FE lenses don't have a leaf shutter, higher sync speeds are impossible and I can live with that, but I was not sure about your applications. Otherwise, Hasselblad FE 2/110mm Planar T* lens is a keeper!

Maybe I'm missing something but my AFD/II syncs at 1/125th
