Chris, 0 is the correct setting you are right.

A with the low volume, it's the source volume when you made the files, not the files themselves.

#3 is simply a mistake, not a source problem.

If you are using QuickTime Player, try for a Menu command like "Window/Show Movie Properties"; this should bring up a window with the various tracks shown (in text); check the Sound Track/Audio Settings to see if one of those settings is turned to '-∞[infinity]', it should be in the middle: at zero...

Yes, I just updated from 7.1.6 to 7.2 and it correctly sets the volume to 0 on #3 now.  I have no idea what setting was different when you created #3, but at least 7.1.6 didn't like it!  

You may want to put a note in the store if you have not already done so, so people will update to 7.2+ to save you more hassle...

Wish I'd seen the announcement earlier.  There must be a lot of downloads going on now because I'm only getting 11KB/sec with bursts up to 11.1KB/sec.

I'm trying to decide if this would be a good purchase for me.   I'm about 2 years into photography and shoot as a hobby.  I use a Canon 20D with L glass, have an Epson 2200 printer, and use Lightroom to process my raw images.  I do not have a montor calibration system.

I'd say that I hardly ever print but if I did my first instinct would be to send them to a professional lab.  Still, if I could get close to professional quality with my existing gear then I'd be very interested in maximizing what I own.

Given my current skill level and current gear would I end up with new knowledge that I could put to use today?  With the rate of change in this industry will this tutorial become obsolete in two years?  I have never snapped an image where I think I've created fine art and doubt anyone would pay to own something I shot.  

Still, it would be a thrill for someone to make a positive comment on something that I created, printed, and hung on a wall.

Will a beginner like me benefit from this or would it just end up making me frustrated?

I'm as well about 2 years into digital photography (some more in anaolg) and I'm really enjoying watching the tutorial. It's highly informative and very vell done.

Even if you don't do much printing yet, it will make you want to print more. I'm looking forward to my next printing session and trying out what I have learned so far from this tutorial.

My warning for you: Michael states at some point that it makes no sense to go on watching the tutorial if your display is not calibrated.  I have two recommendations for your:

- Plan to buy a calibration device.
- Go on watching the tutorial. There is so much else to profit from.

These are very well spend 35$, but it may lead to even higher expenses ;-)

As an individual who has been a faithful supporter of LL and been here more than 4 years, I'm troubled.  My preference remains for DVD delivery which avoids placing all the work on the customer and is preferable in so many ways (other than economic to the seller).

I say "work" because after taking 4 hours to download the first segment, it refuses to unzip completely on my up-to-date Mac.  It unzips 1 and then hangs on the end of 2.  So I am now involved in downloading it again at a speed which will take more  than three hours if it doesn't get worse.  Then of course, I have no way of knowing if it will work.  So if it is slow to begin with and many of us will have to download it again, what does that do to traffic?

It is small consolation to hear that this traffic load was unforeseen-was it really?  Too bad the product can't be delivered with the speed at which our funds are transferred isn't it?  And then there is the time and effort which will be required to burn it to a DVD to watch on TV unless I want to spend watching something the length of "War & Peace" at my computer.  

I'm really looking forward to 20 hours of download time.  I suppose if I take a few days vacation, I can download this while the majority of people might be at work.  Let's see-what are the economics of that.

This has been discussed here before. I sincerely regret that large downloads are a hassle for you, as they may be for some other people. But for the vast majority they are not much trouble at all.

The economics of DVD distribution no longer work for us. The combination of much high postage rates for media mail during the past year or so, increasing production and distribution costs, postal delays (especially into the US), lost and misdelivered mail, etc, etc, all make DVD a much less attractive medium for a company our size.

Online distribution of media is the future (and for many the present). There's no going back. We will continue to deliver the Video Journal on DVD to our existing base that have pre-paid for it, but by Issue #20 will terminate that format. The days of mailing plastic are nearing an end.

Our video tutorials will be delivered exclusively via download.

Michael -- I've downloaded all the zip files, but cannot unzip them on my mac (10.4.10).  The unzipping gets stuck at the very end and does not finish.

I went back to some other zip files I got from your site (the Lightroom series), and they unzip fine -- so the issue does not seem to be with my computer system.

I have the same problem on OS X. The reason for it is that the download times out. The .zip file is not complete and the OS X unzip routine gets stuck instead of issueing an error message. The command line does issue an error message...

So the problem is, as stated in some other posts, the download. As soon as we are able to download the full .zip file, we also be able to unzip it and watch the videos.

So far I have all videos until number 15 and that's enough to watch for the next few days. I'll try later on next week for the rest (...and leave some bandwith to others that didn't get as far ;-))

I have attempted to download the first segment 3 times and each has failed.
Got about 54mb 1st time then lost connection.  2nd time, download never started.
3rd time, started very slowly, got to about 30mb, I walked away for a few minutes
when I came back it was stuck trying to decompress the zip file. There is no way it could have
received the entire file. As it would have taken aat least 30 minutes at my maximum
bandwidth. For what its worth I am running OSX  10.4.10.

Guess I will try again later.

I would have to say it's a must have for the newby. whether or not you have all the equipment that they show in the video you will at least know what to put on your shopping list. Even if you don't print much now this will probably result in you doing it yourself more in the future. Again this video should be on the top of your list especially if your a novice.

Definitely get it - but yes you will at the very least NEED a monitor calibration tool to actually use ANY of the information in the video.  It is simply the foundation to the process, no way around it.

Yes Eleanor, that must be the case. You are not alone, my last attempt I was only getting 20KB/sec
and it failed at 60 mb.  Good thing they gave us 30 tries at each segment, sure hope we don't need
them all. Might be best to wait a day or two before trying again unfortunately.

That's what seems to be the problem.  I'm in the same boat as you, with a speedy cable connection.  I'm on my 4th try for the first segment. I've never gotten a download faster than 30 KB/sec, and all of my attempts have failed or timed out.  The record so far is 220MB/281MB before failure.  If this one fails, I'll forget about it for a week or two.

This is my first purchase of one of LL's download products.  While I appreciate the difficulties of dealing with physical "plastic" media, it's also becoming clear that by the time I'm able to download this tutorial, I could have ordered and received a plastic product in the mail.

Actually, no, you couldn't have...if it were to be distributed via DVD you would be looking at several to 6 months more wait to get it produced.

That was in the old days   .  At least since 10.3 (maybe even 10.2) zip is standard. Even when you  create an archive from the finder's contextual menu, OS X will create a .zip file.

I've tried 5 times and failed. When I look at Safari/Preferences/Desktop - I find the downloads are greyed out and can't be highlighted or dragged out. The ironic thing is I'm in Toronto - I could have walked over to the LL site and carried it home in the time one download occured!
