Changing the thumbnail background?

Anyway to change the thumbnail background?  when selected it's light grey on medium grey. Terrible.   I found in preferences a interface background dropdown, strangely enough, when I change that from white to black etc nothing happens. Tried it few times.

(in bridge I set thumbnail background to black)
