NEC2690wuxi non SV EU can be hardware calibrated ?
« on: May 01, 2007, 02:49:55 pm »

Hello,

I just bought the European version of the NEC2690wuxi (non spectraview)
Has anyone sucessfully mlanaged to hardware calibrate this monitor with either the Spectrraview II software (US) or the Spectraview profiler 4 (EU) ?
I downloaded the tryout version of the spectraview profiler v4.1.2 & apparently I can't calibrate using the monitor LUT. I attach a screenshot of the Spectraview profiler main window & as you can see I can't check the tab "hardware calibration (monitor LUT)
Can anyone tell me what the combined hard & software calibration does mean ?

I've read this post:
http://luminous-landscape.com/forum/lofive...php/t10854.html
Can anyone confirm that the 2690wuxi can be hardware caliubrated with the Spectraviex II that I may buy in the US ?

Many thanks (& NEC, if you're listening, your policies are quite unclear !!!!!)

In the past NEC Europe has reportedly put a firmware tweak in their units that keeps the user from being able to run Spectraview on non-Spectraview versions.  I don't know, but from your experience it sounds as though they are continuing to do this in the xx90 series.  Why they think this is a good idea is beyond me, unless perhaps they're doing it as an extreme form of copy protection for the software — the monitor as dongle.  (Mongle?)

In the US, NEC sells their Spectraview software either separately, or bundled along with an Eye One Display 2 colorimeter in the "SV" versions of the monitors.  I have the 2090uxi and it works fine.  I'm fairly confident the same would be true of the US version of the 2690wuxi.

I too have the (N. Am version) LCD2690wuxi and had been wondering the same question.
It would appear in looking at the nm-select.com site where Spectraview can be downloaded, that the LCD2690wuxi-B (non spectraview) version is compatible with Spectraview software. Not sure about European hardware but calling them might be your best bet.

By the way, this monitor is awesome for photography and I see colors and constrast I didn't see in my calibrated CRT photography monitor. Highly recommended.

Hello,
I've also sen the spectraview on nm-select but can't order it (reserved for US !)
What settings are you using for calibrating your LCD2690 ? (Target black point, target luminance ?)  By default I find the luminance way too high (300cd/m) I tried with 130 & it's far better but still not fully satisfied. Can anyone tell me what's the difference between matrix based or LUT calibration ? some software allows to choose both options.
If I find more info on the spectraview, I'll post them

Proper luminance depends in part on your ambient lighting.  I've been setting my 2090uxi to 100 cd/m², but recently dropped it to 95.

Hi, my monitor is set at Native for color temp and 120 cd/m3 which is what most folks using this monitor for photography use. I find it works well for me. I also have color comp turned on. I use a Sypder2 to calibrate it right now but I'm not sure its worth spending the extra $$ on Spectraview unless there is some clear advantage to doing so. If anyone has any comments on that, I would be interested to hear.

There have been reports that the US SV2 software works for non-SV European models. IIRC in this monster thread:

http://www.hardforum.com/showthread.php?t=1095840

and here (if you speak German):
http://www.prad.de/board/thread.php?threadid=30953

The European SV 4.x software is based on basiCColor Display and does not work for non-SV monitors (for adjusting the monitor LUT). Neither does basiCColor Display (I contacted them).
