DVD ISO Image Files?

There's no mention of an option to download DVD ISO image files. Is this option still being pursued? Will issue #16 be made available this way?

I was very surprised to see Michael's comment about the download video "being well received". I've read the threads here, and the reaction has been mixed at best, mostly negative. As one of the people who reacted negatively, I don't appreciate being sluffed off like that. If you think people are going to be happy sitting in an office chair, watching the LLVJ on a computer screen, I think you are mistaken (Chris asked in the other thread what the real difference there is between a computer screen and a TV, well I don't have a comfy couch in front of my computer).

I was happy with the option to download ISO image files of the DVD, but if that option is not going to be available, I'm back to being unhappy.

I still think that the option of providing a DVD-image file for download is viable - so long as people are prepared to pay for the extra bandwidth (4.3 Gig for DVD-Video vs. <1.0 Gig for HiRes files).

I do not believe however that this is going to be a hugely effective method of distribution. Obviously it will be a option that has to wait until the time when I finish the complete DVD and send it to the replicators. This will be sometime in May - so please be patient!

There's a big difference between what happens and what people say in writing. People tend to talk when they are unhappy and not say anything when happy.

I think it makes much more sense to offer the VJ via download instead of DVD and fortunatly we can take advantage of the price beninfit as well. For me I am happy and will probably take advantage of this and DL most of the previous VJ's when available as well. I have no problem watching the downloaded files on my comfy couch but then again I stream them over my network to my xbox. Im not sure if the file format would work with any conventional media bridge but this is the direction we are going for more and more content. Even netflix is offering movies via DL. I will be most pleased when the HD version is offered. I would much rather the bandwidth be used for HD than a SD DVD ISO.

At least Nero lets you burn a "proper" DVD which plays on most stand-alone home DVD players if you feed it a video file. It does the transcoding on the fly, you'll lose some quality, but at least you can watch it on a big-screen TV without fiddling with cables.

For the record, I'm one of the people happy about the current state of downloads.

Turns out I'm too cheap to not do the download thing.  Plus the extra content bit got me.

The extra content bit is getting to me too. I'm still not happy about this, but will probably, begrudgingly give in. Money is not part of my decision.

To me, Michael and Chris are compromising the quality of their product for ease of delivery. This is disappointing, and makes me question how much pride they put into producing the best quality product out there.

But, come hell or high water, it seems they're going through with it, regardless of what a good number of their subscribers think. I'll convert my subscription, download the videos that are coming to me, and then decide if I'm still satisfied with the product.

I downloaded the hi-res sample clip for #15, as well as AoA DVD Creator, and burned a DVD to compare the quality to the real DVD. I did see a noticeable quality difference, but the quality was acceptable. The file was 42MB, and took 12 minutes to encode and burn on a reasonably fast PC. Extrapolating to the 700 MB that Chris has said an issue will be, it will take close to 3.5 hours to encode and burn   I also don't know how AoA DVD Creator handles multiple titles. There doesn't seem to be a menu built.

When (if?) the dvd image files are made available for download then most issues will be auto-magically resolved;

- download quality will be identical to the current delivered-by-mail dvd
- we will be free to watch it wherever we choose (big screen with sofa, etc)
- postal delivery delays will be a thing of the past

In return we have to pay for a lot more bandwidth on download, plus provide our own blank DVD.

Providing the .iso files for download seems to be the logical outcome.

I'm watching the journal on a large screen with a CRT projector and although the quality of the DVD is very nice for a production I don't like the low quality downloads at all to be honest

I would love the see TS streams or WMVHD versions for HD quality and would be willing to pay for that of course.

But for the time being I would still want to receive my DVDs or download ISO files.
