Can someone point out the characteristics of a lense designed for digital cameras? What is the advantage of using such a lense on a Rebel Xti?

They usually have a smaller image circle and coatings to reduce reflections from the sensor.  (Back to the sensor.)

This translates to less flare and (sometimes) a smaller lens.

And usually less expensive for the quality, too, since it's usually smaller and easier to manufacture.

Thank you both for the info. I apologize for the mis-spelling of lens. Brain blip. Further question based on your input. Does the smaller footprint of the lens mean more angle of view for a given lens if it is digital vs. standard 35 mm designed lens?

A lens designed for a digital camera may have a smaller image circle, however many of the Sigma and Tamron lenses don't.  they often do however have more extensive lens coating and better correction.  Digital sensors are more prone to internal reflections resulting in hot spots on the sensor,  In addition they are often better corrected as digtial sensors are quite good at finding flaws in a lens and so a better lens is required for optimal image quality.

Angle of view is the same regardless of whether the lens was designed for full frame or cropped.  (For a given size sensor.)
