LR webv gallery - color shift
« on: March 14, 2009, 07:05:47 pm »

When I create a web gallery using LR 2.3, upload it, then view it Internet Explorer, the photos have shifted color. It's fairly subtle, but when viewed on the same monitor the originals in LR display a bit warmer than the published photos in IE. Is this an unavoidable result of the published photos being in the sRGB space?

Thanks,

Peter

Lightroom has HTML galleries and Flash Galleries. HTML galleries produce web images which have an embedded profile which can be read by colour managed web browsers like Safari and Firefox (colour management is not on by default in Firefox, and Internet Explorer does not support colour management). Lightroom's Flash galleries still produce images with an embedded profile, however Flash, at this point in time, does not support colour management. Images embedded with sRGB will have reds that tend to be a bit more orange when viewed without colour management.

If you expect your images to be viewed in Internet Explorer or other non colour managed situations use the Lightroom Flash Galleries. They give a slight contrast boost to the image making it a bit more dynamic, although you will see a wee bit less detail in shadows and of course your reds and yellows will be a little warmer.

Hope this helps,

John

Actually, it does. As of Flash Player 10, enabling CM is a single line of ActionScript 3 in the Flash movie, and then CM is available (regardless of browser) to Flash Player 10 on a CM'd computer. There are a couple of other minor requirements.

LR Flash-based web engines however need to be based on ActionScript 2, which does not support CM. In other words, it's a Lightroom 2 problem, no longer one inherent to Flash.

John, I didn't realise that. Thanks for the information. Does that mean the way Lr web engines work they are unlikely to support colour management in Flash in the future?

No, it's likely LR will support it before too long - not to do so would be a particularly bone-headed decision.
