Printing and Using a QLED TV: Does it Work?
« on: November 24, 2023, 01:31:30 pm »

I am currently using a calibrated Dell UP3216q monitor. I am thinking to get an 8k 55" Qled or a 65" Qned  and use it as a monitor. I have always wanted to upgrade to 8k panel and now is a good time because there is currently a %50 discount Black Friday sale.

However, I also print and I am wondering if this would affect color accuracy of my prints. My dell covers %100 sRGB %99 Adobe RGB. Moreover, the Dell utility software makes is easy to seamlessly switch between the two color spaces. However, noticing the difference is not that obvious unless I carefully look for that in a side-by-side comparison. As per the TV, I found an online calibration of a similar tv which after calibration, it covered %95 sRGB and %74 Adobe RGB. Qled panels are apparently VA while Qned panels are IPS. With the tv, I assume I remain in one calibrated setting which doesn't fully cover Adobe RGB. These TV's support HDR so I assume they still have a good color coverage.

My question is if my printing predictability will be severely affected with that TV compared to my current monitor. So I am wondering if anyone who prints has ever used such a TV as a monitor. I am only a hobbyist printer and don't need %100 accuracy; just a very clopse match is enough for me.

Thanks

I am currently using a calibrated Dell UP3216q monitor.
First question: Calibrated how, using what hardware/software?

Using i1 pro display and DisplayCal.
Unlikely that combo will work with such a TV (check with the DisplayCal folks).
In the past, I haven't had much luck with external TV systems.

Personally I would just put it on the wall for tv viewing. Get yourself 2 good monitors for your photography.
My new iMac with my NEC 242W.

Did you buy a TV?

Update: I have not bought my 8k TV yet. I have checked reviews online and surprisingly, TCL 8k TVs have wider color gamut than alternatives from Samsung and LG even though they are less expensive. I wanted to get a TCL but apparently, I was late. They can't be found anywhere: Best Buy, Walmart, Amazon, etc., all show them out of stock. TCL has likely discontinued them. I will still keep looking around.

On another note, TCL has recently presented a 65" 8K OLED curved monitor. This one is meant to be a monitor not a TV. It seems exactly like what I wanted. Price can be very high though, more than what I am willing to spend. Besides, sometimes these manufacturers announce their new products way ahead of the release time. There may still be one or even two years before this new exciting monitor shows up at retail stores.
