The Black Canyon of the Gunnison + 2 more
« on: November 01, 2023, 04:41:45 pm »

Hi all,

Taken on a recent visit to the United States, as we were visiting and re-visiting several of the National Parks and what a wonderful, hidden away photo location we found down in the The Black Canyon of the Gunnison. It was a weekend when we were there and at the height of the Autumn colour in the canyon, yet there was perhaps maybe only a dozen people we saw down in the canyon all day long.

It isn't a very large area that you can actually get to and explore along the Gunnison River, but it is very, very pretty and well worth the steep drive to get down to it.

Yes, a small place but your shot lets us imagine the vertiginous cliffs and the meandering river.

Hey, you were in my neighborhood! Lovely image, looks like the East Portal.
I was pretty near there last weekend, just outside the park and up river a bit.

Thanks again guys  ;D

Here are another couple of shots from the same small area in the bottom of the canyon, but taken on different days, at different focal lengths and at different times of the day. And with one pointing in the opposite direction with a different lens I think.

18 years ago, I bought this book by Dan Margulis, as soon as it came out and read it from cover to cover, maybe three times over.

It definitely is not an easy read the first time you go through it and can take some getting your head around, but it will certainly help you to process your images in the way (or indeed any way) that you want them to be.

This is also an old book now, that was originally written for PS CS2, but everything Dan discusses in it, is still relevant and usable today.

I found this book to be really useful and it made a big difference, to how I have been processing my files ever since.

Hope this helps.

Add me to the list of admirers of your photos, Dave. You've done a great job all around. BTW, I also go the LAB color route in processing some of my work.

Thanks Bob,

And I agree, if you want to work with the yellow end of the spectrum in an image, as well as the brighter end of the greens, then LAB and LAB channel selections, is the only way to go  :)
