Anti static/sticky roller storage
« on: June 19, 2023, 09:12:20 am »

I've just started using a sticky roller and DRS-1 pads to clean mounts before gluing.  Any ideas for storing the roller after use and clean?  I've only used it twice and re-covered the roller with the plastic sheet wrapped around it as delivered, then back in the silver bag, but that will get grubby soon.

Thanks

We leave ours right out in the open on the counter top. On top of a foam pad so we don't get any flat spots on the roller. Doesn't matter if it gets dirt or dust on it as we always swipe it over a pad before using.
We have rolls of 2 sided mounting adhesive that we use instead of the pad from Drytac. (Too expensive) We take a utility knife and cut a piece 13" x10" to use. When it gets dirty we chuck it and cut another.
Way cheaper that the DRS-1 pads.

Thanks Dan, I have some foam.  Good point about not bothering to keep it clean.

Glad you mentioned the alternative to DRS-1 pads.  I bought a 5 pad pack from Adorama who seemed to be cheapest but can use some mounting paper when these are used.

What make mounting paper do you use?  The stuff I have (I think) is likely to peel off the backing paper as I roll.

In the past I purchased Seal but it has just gotten too expensive. I will look it up, I think it may be General 107 from Lexjet. (.54 a sq. ft.) Seal print mount ultra is $1.70 a sq. ft.
The back would not come off of this or any of the good ones. You have to really work at getting a corner up after adhering it to Gator.
The General adhesive would cost you .54 a sq. ft. sheet to clean the roller and the DRS-1 is $1.32 a sheet. (Also a sq. ft.)

I was a bit horrified at the cost of DRS-1 sheets but Adorama were selling 5 packs for $124 (250 sheets).  I got a 12" roller from Amazon for $45 so cost of entry wasn't too bad.

I just glued a 32"x64" abstract printed on Belgian Linen onto Dibond with no defects so it worked really well.

Care to share the part details?

My laminator is not roll to roll, so use leader boards (offcuts from 8x4's - 2mm dibond, 3mm dibond/forex, 5mm Kapa or forex etc) so have an infinite availability of cleaning sheets. Over the years, my hands have become very sensitized to the adhesives in mounting and laminating films, so use nitrile gloves, which turn out to be pretty good at removing dust, particularly if I've just used them to run tac clothes over the table and substrates.

I bought this one

But this looks the same and is only $31

Similar one here. I made a clamp for it so it can also stand upright if I want to clean a film strip. That is how I store it as well with a piece of silicon paper folded over the roller.

Met vriendelijke groet, Ernst

That's good.  I might be able to make a clamp on the side of one of my tables to keep real estate down
